Last Game for SIXTEEN Seniors - Great Run!!!

Houston Kinkaid 41- St Marks 28

Kinkaid wins toss, we kickoff and initial hit by Luke Williams and Cole Labhart finishes off the runner. HK starts at their 24 yard line and get hits with 5 yard penalty. First down Stephen Rambin reads the pitch and has runner for three yard loss.  HK runs a crossing pattern in our 4 deep zone and receiver finds a seam and goes for 37 yards to our 47 yard line.  First down is holding call and its first and 20 for HK. Bubble screen pass to their star Macan Wilson #15 and he will touch the ball many times today. Nine yard completion and brought down by Jimmy Papin and Bear Goldstein.  Twelve yard pass completion and first down and tackle by Reid Thompson. Wilson runs twice for 12 yards and first down at our 24. Good open field tackle by Goldstein on the second run. Wilson runs two more times for 8 yards Mac Labhart on both stops, one with Rambin and one with Otto Martinek. First down on our 16 yard line. Their QB finds a hole and runs for a 16 yard TD. Their offense has a lot of moving parts and misdirection plays. PAT is good and its 7-0 with 8 minutes left in first quarter.
Danny Koudelka with a 13 yard return and we start at the 24 yard line. First down quick throw John Webb   to John Caldwell, good block by Koudelka and he goes for 10. Caldwell fakes a quick slant and turns it up field and   Webb perfect throw and good route and it’s a 32 yard gain to HK 34 yard line.  Webb back to pass and hits Kendrick Spraglin on a streak and Spraglin good over the shoulder catch and we have first down on the 2.  Koudelka in motion left to write and Webb hits him with quick pass and Danny untouched into end zone.  TD.    PAT by Jacob Wilner is good.    It’s a four play 76 yard drive.  John Webb four for four to three different receivers. Good protection by the offensive line.
SEVEN TO SEVEN with SEVEN minutes left in first quarter.  It will be back and forth all day!!!!

We kickoff and nice open field tackle by Harrison Hewitt, welcome back #22, has not played since the MART game with knee injury. And HK starts at the 19 yard line. Martinek beats his blocker and goes high and Papin goes low for no gain. HK hits first down pass and tackle by Hewitt. Defense will hold here on three plays.  First down Rambin strings out the pitch and good hard hit by Goldstein for gain of one. Second down quick pass to slot guy with two blockers, good team defense by Hewitt, Rambin and Goldstein for another ONE YARD gain. Third down and incomplete pass and good tight coverage by Hewitt.    KINKAID is punting.   Punt is downed at our 32 yard line
Webb to Spraglin for 8 yards, good block by Koudelka.  Thompson finds hole in the zone, Webb hits him, and Reid makes a guy miss and 16 yard gain to HK 44.  Next play Caldwell beat his DB, but Kinkaid guy holds him and its 10 yard pass interference.  We then stall.   Webb to Caldwell for 5, Webb to Thompson for 2 and Reid is walloped but holds ball.  We misfire on two passes and HK takes over on downs at their 27 yard line.
Kinkaid then goes on 10 play 73 yard drive that ends on a one yard TD on the first play of the second quarter. 8 runs, 2 passes and a big 15 yard penalty on us.  First down is hit with Kellam Hall and Goldstein, second down with M. Labhart and Martinek. Incomplete pass and unnecessary roughness penalty and its first down on our 48 yard line. Hewitt and Goldstein with hit on QB run, Papin and M. Labhart hold Wilson for one on second down, Wilson gets a first down with hits from M. Labhart and George Law. Good catch by their receiver on a streak route in traffic and HK has first down on our 2. We hold for two plays on Wilson. First down K. Hall beats his blocker with the tackle, second and goal it’s M. Labhart with stop and on third and goal,  Papin with great play to split two blockers and get a shot on runner but RB has the momentum and he is in.
PAT is good.
HK 14 -  SM 7 with the second quarter just starting.
Kinkaid kicks out of bounds and we start at the 30.
On second down, real nice timing pattern with Webb to Caldwell down and out and first down on 40.
Next play, good block on end by Dominic Garcia and Tommy Gudmundsson on RT and Thompson cracks back on LB and Malcolm Bowman turns corner for 8 yards.  15 yard penalty on HK and we have first down on HK 37 yard line. Good pickup and communication on a line stunt between Michael Doorey and Cole Labhart on the previous play. Short pass to Thompson for 2 yards on third down, Kinkaid has two deep zone, Spraglin splits the two safeties and is wide open, and Webb hits him in stride for a 35 yard TD. Nice clean pocket, defensive end did get loose and Bowman puts a shot on him to give Webb that extra second. Wilner PAT is good its 14-14 with 10 minutes left in second quarter.

SM 14 Kinkaid 14.

Big kickoff return by their Wilson guy and its first down on our 41. Kinkaid passes 5 times for 32 yards and runs twice for four yards and they have fourth and one at our ten.   Good hit by Goldstein & Law on first down. Good pass break up by Luke Williams going high in the end zone to save a TD. Real nice one on one tackle by Papin to throw runner for loss.  So we get back to the fourth and one play, M. Labhart scrapes off tackle and Goldstein is lined up on line of scrimmage and they both combine for good hit & stop on their star Wilson. The referee unbelievably looks at spot and says first down, a bunch of our knucklehead dads, including this knucklehead   dad yell for” MEASUREMENT”. It is close, they bring out the chains and LO AND BEHOLD- we have stopped them. Great play on fourth down. We start at our own ten.

We go three and out on offense and Law is kicking from the goal line. Doorey is first guy downfield and as he approaches the punt returner, he is grabbed and spun around and an obvious holding penalty RIGHT IN FRONT of the worthless back judge and its not called. Returner runs back punt for 32 yards and its first down HK at our 17 yard line.  HK runs ANOTHER short crossing pattern and all that they are trying to do is a PICK PLAY and it works and Goldstein’s man, runs into Rambin and it gives Rambin’ s guy that extra step and it’s a completed pass to our three yard line. Its offensive pass interference and its not called.
Next play is direct snap to Wilson and he goes around our right end for a TD. PAT is good and its

Kinkaid 21 SM 14 with 6 minutes left in second quarter.

Koudelka takes kickoff twenty yards and we start on the HK 30 yard line. Short pass over the middle to Justin Jones and he turns it up field for 20 yards. Good blocks by Victor Calvillo, C. Labhart and Doorey and Webb hits Thompson on a slant and Reid goes for 15 to the HK 36 yard line.  Next play Garcia hits the DE so hard that he also ends up taking out a LB also, GOOD STUFF, Webb to Caldwell for 4 yards and 7 yards on the next play. Kinkaid also hit with a 15 yard penalty and we have first down on the 12 yard line.
Webb hits Caldwell on a slant, John blasts over one tackler, another guy hits him and at  the two another tackler comes from behind and ball comes free, I watched this play several times, not the best angle but I think Caldwell is down and its first down at the 2. But again, the infamous back judge rules a fumble into end zone.

Kinkaid gets the ball at the 20. They then go on 10 play, three first down drive that will stall at our 30 yard line. K. Hall good first hit and then Williams with a bigger stick and Chris Roach finish off runner. Martinek with a spin move, M. Labhart and K. Hall bring down Wilson after a 3 yard run. Incomplete pass with Roach in coverage. On 4th and four, K. Hall with pressure on QB almost gets a pass knock down but QB hits Wilson on short flare pass and Martinek hustling downfield gets the unassisted tackle. First down at our 33 yard line. First down   K.Hall, Garcia (playing NT) and Martinek for stop on short run. Second down incomplete pass with K. Hall in coverage, third down long pass incomplete with Williams in coverage. FOURTH down we blitz all linebackers but QB gets it away but receiver slips and Roach had the coverage anyway.
We get the ball at the 30 yard line with less than a minute left. Webb scrambles for 6 yards and Thompson peels back and levels a DB. Next play is a dropped pass, Webb to Koudelka on short pass and then we have another dropped pass and its halftime.

KINKAID 21 ST  MARKS 14     HALFTIME

We receive short kickoff and start at our 28 yard line.  Webb to Thompson for 10 yards and first down. We then go three incomplete passes and have to punt. Good punt by Law and Kinkaid starts at their 24.
First down-K. Hall from the offside LB chases RB to other side and he combines with Goldstein for no gain. Good hustling play by Kellam.  On second down HK goes for the bomb and Thompson easily reads the pump and go  and is perfect position and intercepts on the 44 yard line and his momentum gets him tackled on the 42 of SM. We get hit for a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty after the turnover and we start at the 27 yard line.
First down, quick throw to Caldwell, Thompson with lead block, Caldwell beats one tackler and goes for 16 yards and FIRST DOWN.   First down short pass to Thompson for three, second down is incomplete pass and it sure looked like pass interference on DB covering Caldwell. Third down, we don’t pick up the blitz and John Webb never sees him coming and is really hit hard, they rushed six on our five linemen and it’s a loss of seven and we are punting.  George Law with a pretty athletic play on high snap and has that Presence of Mind to get kick away for 40 yards.
Kinkaid starts at their 23.  They run six plays, 4 passes, 3 are complete, and two runs and get three first downs. Good hard tackle by Goldstein on one of the completed passes, Papin first hit and Mac Labhart buries #15 Wilson on short run, Goldstein & Williams combine for stop on quick pass, Papin and Goldstein low and Cameron Baxley high for stop on QB run. It is now second and seven at our 47 yard line, it looks like a well-designed coverage by Coach Labhart,  it looks on film that it is one on  one coverage with Thompson on outside receiver and one on one coverage by Luke Williams on slot guy- #15 Wilson. As the ball is snapped, Thompson reads the quick throw to slot receiver and jumps the short route or it was designed for him to stay in flat, he cuts in front of receiver and goes easily  untouched for a 52 yard PICK SIX TD.
   YEE HAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There was a collective gasp and some pessimistic thought as QB Webb was hit on previous series and as the doctor and trainers are working on him on the sideline. This TD really got the crowd back into the positive spirit!!!!!
PAT is good by Wilner and we are TIED-  21  ALL with 6 minutes left in third quarter.

Kinkaid starts on the 32 yard line after kickoff. Tackle by Williams on kickoff. First down, short gain and tackle by Thompson. Third down, they hit a complete pass and we are hit for a roughing the passer penalty.  First down on SM 33 yard line. Nice middle screen to Wilson and a solid open field, saving TD tackle by Papin.  On first down inside handoff   and Papin beats his blocker and good tackle for 3 yard gain. On second down Williams with a diving block of pass to save a TD.  On third down Cole Labhart is playing NT and is held and refs catch it and ten yard penalty.  Re- play third down and incomplete pass with Thompson good positioning and coverage and on 4th down receiver drops the ball.
We take over at our 28 yard line with about three minutes left in third quarter.
We go nowhere, have   a high snap for loss on third down and Law is punting and it’s a 37 yard punt, first down for Kinkaid on its on 34 yard line after punt and five yard HK penalty.

Kinkaid will have the ball for eight plays including the first play of the fourth quarter. Kinkaid will get two first downs and one was result of a SM penalty. So defense is fired up and there is energy as the score is tied late in third quarter. Good defensive plays, hard hit by Goldstein on QB run. Goldstein, Williams and M. Labhart all with good coverage/positioning on a quick post incomplete.  M. Labhart with first hit and runner nailed by Baxley and Martinek.  Papin, Goldstein and Rambin all fighting off blockers to hold #15 Wilson to short gain. Papin nice read on QB mis direction run and solo tackle for no gain.  Incomplete deep play- action post pass with Thompson in coverage. Third down, screen pass to their tight end, K. Hall reads it and is able to turn runner into middle of field and Law from opposite DE is hustling and makes the one on one tackle. GOOD JOB. Fourth down and five on our 32 yard line and QB throws short and we get the ball.

21-21  with  11:50 left in game.  First down SM at our 32.

Webb to Caldwell and Webb to Thompson, two short passes and we have one first down. We then have a holding penalty and we stall and have to punt. Those ten yard holding penalties are killers.  We punt and HK starts at their own 31 yard line and there is ten minutes left in game.
Kinkaid has a 7 play, 69 yard drive for a touchdown. Two big pass completions were the key. Some good defensive plays here;   Papin and M. Labhart on a run blitz holds the Wilson guy for two yards;   incomplete pass with Roach in coverage; they got us on a halfback pass- it was a well-designed play, they had three receivers to our left, and did a quick pitch to their RB, going to the left and the short side and we are attacking and he stops and throws, it looked like one of our plays that Coach Epperson has in our arsenal.  So sometimes, I know it is hard to do, but they have good coaches too and they got us.  And it was still a great catch to complete the play!!!   Cole Labhart first hit on RB then gets help with Papin, and Goldstein. Rambin and Williams combine for hit downfield on RB. On first and goal from SM 5, Wilson finds a hole and scores. PAT is good.

Eight minutes left in game—KINKAID 28,  ST MARKS 21.

Kickoff- Koudelka catches the ball on the left side, right at the 25 yard line, gets two initial blocks-one by Kellam Hall and Otto Martinek gets so tangled up with the defensive player that that Kinkaid player loses his focus and Danny goes through the hole created by these two blocks.  Within seconds Koudelka is free, he evades a diving tackle and has only the kicker in front of him, and he sets up the kicker with a good move and then sees a tackler coming from his right side and cuts behind him and outraces two guys to the corner of the end zone.  It is pretty cool to see our sideline going nuts and the crowd in the stands  are all cheering , and we knew that Bob was there in spirit, as DK scores!!!  TOUCHDOWN- ANOTHER BIG PLAY FOR SM!!!!

Wilner PAT is good and we are tired at 28 ALL----- with 7:35 left.    WOW!!!!

After short kickoff, Kinkaid starts at the 42 yard line. They get two first downs on two successive plays and they are then stopped.  Papin beats a blocker and goes low and Baxley finishes him off by going high for no gain.  Good open field tackle by Williams on long run, he was our last defender. So HK has a first down at our TWELVE YARD LINE.
First down their blocker tackles Martinek and they get a ten yard penalty. They take a shot on a streak pattern and Roach is able to push him out of bounds-incomplete.  Second down is middle screen to Wilson, Papin reads it, breaks between two blockers for first hit and Martinek hustling up field finishes him off for a short gain. Good D!!!!  HK penalized for 15 yards on offensive pass interference- THE PICK PLAY—but they have been doing it all day.  Jimmy Papin dropping deep on pass coverage with a pass break up on third down and HK punts with tied score at 28.
We start at the 20 yard line.
Two receivers left, on short side of field, quick throw to Spraglin, Victor Calvillo chips the rusher and he is leading the way outside, T. Gudmundsson hustles downfield and gets the safety,   Doorey, Garcia and C. Labhart control their three guys and Webb gets rid of it quickly, Thompson good block on outside DB and Kendrick splits the blocks and goes for 38 yards to the HK 42 yard line.   Malcolm Bowman back in, has a hurting foot,  makes a good run and cuts back and you see that lovely yellow flag coming into the picture- I watched this play from several views and several times and could never see the holding call- but that is what the call is.  We do our trick play of the day, three receivers left and Thompson gets the quick throw from Webb and Reid throws to Bowman down the sideline on a wheel route and it’s just tipped away.  Well-designed play but we just miss.
Law with a bouncing punt, good hustle by Goldstein and Doorey who both beat their blockers and down the punt at the two yard line. So with about FIVE minutes left in game, it is 28-28 and Kinkaid has to go 98 yards.     MY HEART!!!!

Kinkaid, I hate to say, goes 98 yards in 8 plays and gets 4 first downs and scores with 1 minute and 13 seconds left.

I think John Webb is hurt and can’t throw with his usual accuracy, the defense has been on the field for the whole second half as we score on an interception and kickoff return, it is hot and Mac Labhart and other guys are cramping up and it is the perfect storm in a bad sense.

Good defensive plays on this series by a hustling Rambin going downfield for a tackle, Cole Labhart going down the line and putting a hit on Wilson for small gain. C. Labhart fighting off two blockers and combining with George Law on short gain. Roach, K. Hall, Goldstein and Williams gang tackle for short gain. Good open field tackle by Williams on large gain. Papin, Goldstein, Martinek and Rambin with a no gain stop. They hit a short pass and it goes for a 42 yard TD

KINKAID 35 SM 28 with one minute and 13 seconds left.

Short kickoff and we start at the 33 yard line.  Webb to Caldwell for 6, Webb to Caldwell for 4 and first down.  Garcia is handling the right DE on his blocking assignment and DE reads the play and makes an athletic play and gets an interception and goes the distance.
PAT is no good and its Kinkaid 41 SM 27 with 45 seconds left in game.

Justin Jones with a 30 yard kickoff return. But time is low.  We complete three passes but run out of time. And game ends on the Kinkaid 33 yard line.

Final Score Kinkaid 41 St Marks 28.

NOTES:
John Webb was 31 for 48 for 326 and two TD’s, John Caldwell 12 catches for 107 yards ,Reid Thompson  7 catches for 56 yards, Kendrick Spraglin 6 catches for 132 yards and one TD.  Danny Koudelka 2 catches for 5 yards and one receiving TD. Malcolm Bowman caught 3 and Justin Jones caught one.
Kinkaid had 90 offensive snaps ( 47 runs and 43 pass attempts). That was tough on our defense on a pretty warm afternoon. The long day for the defense was compounded by the two big TD’s which gave the D, no time to rest.  Reid Thompson 52 yard interception PICK SIX TD and Danny Koudelka 75 yard Kickoff Return.  Their star Macan Wilson #15 who has accepted a football scholarship to Northwestern touched the ball 32 times from the line of scrimmage and returned a couple of kicks also. He accounted for 218 yards of offense, not counting kick returns.
I used the Dallas Morning Stats for the whole year and here is what they showed- I don’t know if they ever added the Oklahoma game to these.
John Webb was 226 for 364 for 3152 yards and THIRTY TWO TD’s. Walter Johnson also had a TD pass.
Justin Jones carried 82 yards for 444 yards and 4 TD’s and Malcolm Bowman was 53 carries for 289 yards and 4 TD’s.
Receiving: John Caldwell 72 catches for 1250 yards and 13 TD’s. Reid Thompson 50 catches for 588 yards, 5 receiving TD’s and the TD on interception. Kendrick Spraglin 42 catches for 802 yards and 7 TD’s. Danny Koudelka 34 catches for 287 yards and 5 receiving TD’s and also the kickoff return TD. Malcolm Bowman caught 10 balls, Harrison Hewitt caught 9 and all in the Mart game. Justin Jones caught 8 and one TD. Clayton Roberts had one receiving TD.  Jacob Wilner had 4 field goals and 35 extra points for a total of 47 points. John Webb scored a TD, also Stephen Rambin on interception TD. Luke Williams had a pick six interception TD that was called back on a penalty well behind the play, but I wanted to mention it.
In nine games we scored 317 and we allowed 198 and we called off the dogs in two games at halftime.
GREAT YEAR OFFENSIVE LINEMAN: Center Michael Doorey, Guards Cole Labhart and Tommy Gudmundsson, Tackles Victor Calvillo and Dominic Garcia.

Thank you to the captains for great leadership: Garcia, Goldstein, P. Gudmundsson, Papin and Thompson.
Paul you were dealt a tough blow but you handled it with class!!!!

Finally, we had 16 seniors play their last game on Saturday. I have made every game home and away for the last three years (yes, bus trips are fun). I made a list of these guys and the number of games that they started in the last three years and I came up with 210 games .  So a two year starter who was not injured would have the number of 18 games.  So 210 is a pretty big figure,   especially when we had our share of injuries, when we had guys who didn’t play all three years. So seniors, be proud!!!!!!!

Next year: we got  three big guys coming back on Offense: Webb, Caldwell and Bowman and two O line starters in Calvillo and T. Gudmundsson.  And J. Jones will be fitting in there somewhere.
On defense: we also have three big guys coming back: Williams, M. Labhart and K. Hall and Baxley will also be in the mix.    So juniors, its your game now!!!!!

Thank you to HEAD COACH Epperson and ASST Coaches:  Couch, Jackson, Labhart and Rivera.  Great season and fun year.

Thanks for reading.
