Lions Dominate on ESD Turf

St. Marks  38 -  ESD 19

A tale of two halves, an explosive first half and a penalty filled, sloppy offense and good defense second half.
STM wins the toss and receives, after touchback we start at 25. First down, we go for the bomb, good adjustment on deep sideline pass by Kendrick Spraglin from John Webb and it goes for 31 yards and we have first down on ESD 44. Webb goes deep on first down to John Caldwell, it looked like defender just got a finger on the ball and Caldwell with good concentration, bobbles and pulls it in on a sliding catch at the 2 yard line, 42 yard completion. First down they stuff us on a run, second down a fumbled snap that ESD recovers but they are called for offside. First down on one yd. line, three receivers left, lone receiver right (Caldwell), quick slant Webb to Caldwell TOUCHDOWN. Jacob Wilner PAT is good.  7-0 after four plays, and only one minute and 14 seconds of playing time. Four plays, 75 yards and Webb is 3 for 3 for 75 yards. Good protection from those five faceless, nameless lineman!!
Mac Labhart with the tackle on the short kickoff and ESD starts at their 28. Their good running back Jack Johnson gets two first downs in three carries and 20 yards. ESD than has a ten yard holding penalty and its first and 20. They get 14 back on short pass on first down, second down M. Labhart nice penetrating tackle as he throws runner for a loss, third down good QB pressure by Jimmy Papin as they attempt screen pass but Stephen Rambin & M. Labhart are all over it for no gain. FOURTH DOWN & ITS PUNTING TIME.
ESD punts into our end zone and after a penalty we have first down on the 15 yard line.  QB Webb back to pass and throws the perfect bomb with “air under it” and Spraglin catches it in full stride on the 42 and sprints the other 58 yards for an 85 yard pitch and catch. Not as long as the Joe Bush to Cameron Cole  99 yarder at Greenhill last year, but this is in the top ten of longest TD’s in STM history.  Two other guys made good plays on this TD, besides the QB & receiver, the ESD two defensive ends did a line  stunt, pardon me if I’m now being elementary, ESD has four defensive lineman, 2 ends and 2 tackles, on this play , it’s a good call by their coaches, knowing that we are PROBABLY passing, the two def. tackles rush between our guard and our tackle on both sides, their goal is to get our two lineman(guard & tackle) confused  and to have our two lineman on each side block one guy on each side. The defensive ends hesitate and then run behind their teammate and circle around to the center position to come untouched with a full head of steam and then try to knock Mr. Webb into never never land!! Michael Doorey at center, sees the right end coming off the pile and nails him, Malcolm Bowman with his head on a swivel, sees the left end coming up the middle and blasts him.  Webb then has that extra second to throw and it’s a TD. Well done both guys. I haven’t mentioned him this year but Coach Couch (line coach) has these guys working together, thinking and communicating as a unit and hustling downfield to get that secondary block.  Jacob Wilner PAT is good.
14 to zero   six minutes left in first qtr.
ESD takes over after kickoff at 34 yard line, run for a first down, pass for a first down and then beats our defense for a 52 yard TD pass and its 14-7 with 5 minutes left in first quarter.
St Marks 14, ESD 7.
We receive kickoff in end zone and start at our 25.  Webb hits Reid Thompson for 11 and first down. We then have two incomplete passes and a short run and we are punting for the first time. ESD takes over at the 32. A Johnson run up the middle gets 11 and first down. And then we get an offside penalty and ESD has first and five at midfield. Defense now takes over. First down incomplete pass, second down George Law and Stephen Rambin hold runner for 3 yard gain on its third and two, good QB pressure by Law but receiver is behind our defense but QB overthrows wide open guy. ESD is punting. Great punt that rolls out of bounds at the 2 yard line.
We then go on a 98 yard  7 play TD drive with the help of a 15 ESD penalty.
Webb throwing from the end zone,  9 yard completion to Danny Koudelka. Webb to Spraglin for 10 and first down. Big hole opened by Cole Labhart and Victor Calvillo and Bowman goes for 5 yards.  Webb rolls right and hits Caldwell for 11 and FIRST DOWN. Webb getting some pressure has to scramble left and finds Spraglin who goes high for the catch for 16 yards and another FIRST DOWN. Big hole as Dominic Garcia takes his man completely out of the play, Tommy Gudmundsson cracks down on tackle and Bowman with that great vision cuts back as Doorey gets LB. Gain of 14 and FIRST DOWN at ESD 33. Pass interference call gives us first down on ESD 18 yard line.  Three receivers to the right, Koudelka alone on left side runs a post then flag route and beats his defender and perfect pass from Webb who was under some pressure. and touchdown Koudelka in the back of the end zone. Nice route. PAT by Wilner good. Webb  5 for 5, for 64 yards .
STM 21 ESD 7 30 seconds left in first qtr.
We kickoff and returner finds a hole, Wilner slows him up and nice hustle and speed by Spraglin as he saves a TD and gets the stop at our 24 yard line. Good play by Law who trips up runner for 2 yard gain.
END OF FIRST QUARTER.

Two incomplete passes with Luke Williams and Thompson in coverage.  ESD then hits a 41 yard field goal.
STM 21 ESD 10.
Justin Jones returns kickoff for 22 yards to SM 21 yard line. Good hole between C. Labhart and Calvillo and Bowman goes for nine. First down and good throw to Caldwell streaking down the right sideline for 32 yards. First down on ESD 36. We get first down on 21 after ESD penalty. SM gets a penalty after a nice Webb to Thompson reception that’s called back. Webb hits Spraglin for 11 yards and first down on 18 yard line. Thompson then runs a good post corner pattern and Webb hits him in corner of end zone for Touchdown.  Seven play 78 yard drive. PAT is good by Wilner.
SM 28 ESD 10 with nine minutes left in half.
Big kick off by Wilner and great coverage by (I believe, not a good film angle) Jimmy Papin and Bear Goldstein for a tackle at the NINE. First down good team tackle by Kellum Hall, Papin and M. Labhart for gain of 4, second down Goldstein and Rambin combine on sweep to hold runner for 2 yards. Third down K. Hall blitzes and engages blocker, goes high and knocks pass down. Real good defensive series and ESD is punting from their own 15 yard line. Koudelka 7 yard punt return. We start at our own 43.
We go nowhere on offense and on fourth down Wilner gets his first pass attempt as the punt team kind of implodes and ESD gets the ball at our 45 yard line. M. Labhart and Papin stops Johnson for 4 yard gain, Chris Roach has the pass defense on second down. Third down another incomplete pass. Fourth and six and ESD hits a crossing pass to our 22 yard line. We have a ten yard penalty and on first down, short pass for touchdown, ESD goes for two, I don’t understand that strategy in the second quarter, and receiver drops a pass.
SM 28 ESD 16. Five minutes left in half.
Kickoff into end zone and we start at the 25  we then go on a 12 play drive that also has FIVE penalties.
Webb to Spraglin for 7, Webb runs for 2 and Bowman gets a tough yard for First Down. Webb scrambles and hits Caldwell for 12 and first down at SM 48. Webb to Thompson for 5 yards. Webb to Bowman for 11 yards on a swing pass to ESD 36. They get a pick but they also get a penalty and we have first down on 19. Nice hole between Garcia and Gudmundsson on a draw and Bowman goes for 9 yards. Bowman with a tough inside run and goes for 7 and first down at ESD 3 yard line. We then get hit with two holding penalties and the ESD has a penalty and we have first down on the Seven yard line.  Webb then hits Caldwell on down and out pattern for TD pass Wilner PAT is good.
SM 35-  ESD 16
HALFTIME.

THERE WILL BE NOT MUCH OFFENSE IN THE SECOND HALF, some will be caused by good defense and some will be caused by sloppy offense.
We kick off & ESD starts the third quarter on the 24 after short kickoff, ESD runs five plays, gets one first down and has to punt at their 42 yard line. First down with M. Labhart standing up the runner on solid hit and Martinek & Papin finishing off runner for no gain. Lendon Hall with tackle after first down completion. Goldstein with good pursuit and hit on short pass. Next play Papin dropping back into his zone coverage area almost has an interception as he knocks ball down. Third down Rambin smells out the screen pass and is all over the receiver with help from George Law, Thompson & Goldstein were also bearing down- good defense & no gain.
ESD punts, short return by Koudelka and we start at the 20 yard line.
First down and every offensive lineman does his job, Garcia blocks his man so far that they both go off the film. Both guards C. Labhart and Gudmundsson control their men to the outside, Doorey gets the onside LB and Calvillo gets the offside LB,   Bowman reads the blocks, makes a cut and has a quick nine yard gain.  Well designed and well executed play. Good pass and catch Webb to Caldwell for 9 yards to the 40. Third and one, sometimes Bowman has hole and sometimes its all him—LB comes free and Bowman shrugs him off in the backfield and then has a tough hard run going over people for 8 yards. First down at our 40.  Second down Webb hits Caldwell for 7 yards and the play was saved AGAIN by Bowman who picked up the blitzer and gave Webb that extra second. On 4th and 2- Webb hits Caldwell again for 5 yards and first down on ESD 39. On second down Webb hits Thompson on a crossing pattern and as Reid turns up field, the safety hits him low and Thompson does a forward flip and lands on his back but holds onto the ball. Scary looking when we saw it live .Sixteen yards and first down at ESD 23. Our offense than stalls, two penalties, a run for zero, two incomplete passes and on fourth down QB Webb is sacked for first time and it’s a 10 yard loss  and ESD takes over the ball.
ESD hits two passes for 44 yards and first down at SM 14. Two passes incomplete, good coverage by Roach on 2nd down, on third and ten Thompson with the tackle after completed pass and its fourth and 3 and ESD hits a 24 yard field goal.
SM 35 ESD 19 --two minutes left in third quarter.
ESD kicks off and Koudelka takes the ball at the three, gets two good blocks from Calvillo and Goldstein, fakes out one guy and goes for  69 yards to the ESD 28, good run and our longest kick return of the year and Danny comes close to breaking it all the way.  Webb to Thompson for 5 yards, we then have two incomplete passes, one was a drop and we then miss a 40 yard field goal and ESD has the ball again on their 23.
First down QB rolls right and stops to throw and Papin crushes him from behind and the ball pops free and Kyle Weinstein recovers the fumble at ESD 16 yard line.
We have an incomplete pass, ESD penalty and SM penalty and we end the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER.
We have 3rd and 20 at ESD 26, Webb hits Caldwell for 12 yards and gets some extra yards with a good move.   Jacob Wilner with a 31 yard field goal on fourth down.
SM 38 - ESD 19.
ESD returns kickoff to the 31 yard line. We are hit with 15 yard pass interference penalty and first down at their 46.  ESD hits three passes in a row for 28 yards and a second down and eight at our 28 yard line, Justin Jones at defensive end/LB puts pressure on QB who throws a down and out, Thompson reading QB eyes, jumps the route, goes high for the PICK and if it wasn’t for the short side of the field and another receiver in the area would have gone the distance. Good play!!!   Our offense goes nowhere, two runs for not much, a penalty and incomplete pass.
Wilner bombs a punt with a good roll for 60 yards that goes to the ESD 8 yard line. NICE.
ESD penalty and they are backed up with a first down at their 4 yard line. ESD goes for the deep pass on first down and Thompson running with the receiver and has the good inside position, uses his body perfectly as a shield and has his second interception in two plays and is downed at the ESD 34. That gives us three defensive turnovers in the last three ESD series. YES!!
Webb hits Thompson for 7, Bowman tough inside run for 5 and first down to the ESD 22. Webb to Caldwell for 11 yards and first down at the Eleven.  We then have two runs for not much and incomplete pass and we miss a field goal with five minutes left in game.
ESD has the ball for six plays, gets one first down and on the sixth play Luke Williams intercepts and runs the ball for an apparent TD. But we have a penalty after the interception  Good hits on this series by Papin and M. Labhart.
Walter Johnson in at QB and we run Jones & W. Johnson and give ESD ball back after four plays
Good play by Rambin and Abeer Karim on first down. Good pursuit by Jones on second down. And on final play of game, QB pressure by Robert Keeler and L. Hall in coverage. We had several of the sophomores seeing some playing time in the last couple of series.
FINAL SCORE   St Marks 38 -  ESD 19.

NOTES:  I found a couple of mistakes with the Dallas Morning News stats but I have no other options. QB Webb was 26 for 42 and 365 yards and FIVE TD’s and probably had 5 balls dropped. Malcolm Bowman 20 carries for 71 yards. Receiving: Caldwell 10 catches for 149 yards and TWO TD’s; Spraglin 6 catches for 148 and TD; Thompson 6-62 and TD; Koudelka 3 for 27 and TD. Bowman 1 for 11. Webb only had one sack as ESD constantly was blitzing in second half-good job O Line.
Defense: after giving up 19 points in first half and some points were result of short field possessions. Defense gives up only 3 points in second half. ESD got only 58 yards rushing in the game. Good job. We only had two interceptions in previous 5 games (Rambin & L. Hall) so it was nice to see THREE on Friday, two for Reid Thompson and one for Luke Williams. And with the Papin QB hit for a fumble, which gave us four turnovers in 4 straight series.
PLAYOFFS: I talked to Mark Sullivan, AD before game on Friday. If we win the next two games, Holland Hall and Greenhill than we will be North SPC #1seed (large school) and will have a home game on SATURDAY November 3 against more than likely the loser of the Oct 19 game between Houston Kinkaid vs. Houston Bellaire Episcopal. Two real good teams.
Holland hall was really embarrassed last Friday and our guys really have to come out and take it to them from the START on this Friday night.
