A Disappointing Loss - St. Mark's vs All Saints

All Saints 45- St Marks 23

This is sure not as fun as the first two blogs, but we did do a lot of good stuff on Friday night. We win the toss & defer. With good coverage on kickoff, All Saints starts on their own 27. First down is QB rollout, Reid Thompson reads the pattern, jumps the route, goes high for the catch and tips the ball forward and an alert Stephen Rambin has an interception and we start on the AS 32 yard line. The players, coaches, band, cheerleaders and parents are going nuts. Coach Epp goes for the jugular on first down, John Webb throws a great touch pass and John Caldwell runs under the ball at the 2 yard line and strolls in. In 21 seconds into game and it is 7-0 St Marks. WHAT A START!!  Jacob Wilner after PAT has good kickoff into the end zone.     AS starts on their 25 and run seven plays, good tackles on running plays by George Law and Otto Martinek, a holding penalty, a QB scramble on third down that gets a first down and three incomplete passes and AS is punting  from their 44 and defense with good series.
Danny Koudelka with fair catch and we start at our own 21. Short pass complete to Kendrick Spraglin and then Webb hits Caldwell in traffic with a 12 yard pass and first down. We then misfire on three passes and we punt from our own 35 yard line. AS starts on their 33 yard line.  Good tackles by Rambin & Bear Goldstein on running plays, good pass defense by Goldstein on a long pass and after a short pass and first down on the AS 48, the next play is a sweep to our right side and the AS running back goes 52 yards for the tying TD, PAT is good and score is 7-7 with 7:13 left in the first quarter.
We start at our own 16 after short run by Danny Koudelka on kickoff. Three straight completions by Webb to Koudelka for 4, Spraglin good catch in traffic for 11 yards and first down. Webb to Thompson for 8, then on 2nd & two from the SM 39 yard line, Justin Jones on a handoff makes a defender miss in the backfield and has a determined, tough run for 24 yards to the AS 37 yard line. Good initial block by Michael Doorey and downfield blocks by Thompson & Caldwell. It was interesting to me that as the SM offense was lined up before the Jones run, there were 3 or 4 defenders who were looking at their wrist band cards for the defensive play number and were not really ready for the play. My son tells me (sometimes we actually talk), that the offense could go a lot faster with our no huddle NASCAR (that’s what the team calls it) offense but the referee does not put the ball in play quickly enough and it actually gives the defense time to rest and or substitute.  First and ten and the Webb to Caldwell show strikes again, great protection and Webb throws a bullet to the streaking Caldwell who catches the ball at the 18 yard line and again strolls into the end zone!!  John Webb is now 9 for 12 and two touchdowns and he hasn’t been touched. Great protection by tackles Dominic Garcia and Victor Calvillo and guards Tommy Gudmundsson and Cole Labhart and center Doorey.  Also as Malcolm Bowman did a great job last year as a blocker and we expect the same this week or next from Bowman, Justin Jones is also doing his job picking up the blitz or double teaming an elusive D lineman.  Wilner PAT is good & it is SM 14 AS 7.
We kickoff and great hustle and tackle by Martinek and Rambin on the AS 18 yard line. AS gets two first downs and they have two penalties, solid defensive plays by   Jimmy Papin and Goldstein on a hit, Luke Williams for a good hit, Rambin & Papin on a run blitz for a three yard loss, Mac Labhart and Goldstein fighting off three blockers for a TD saving tackle and Goldstein again for a long pass defense. AS is punting from their own 38 yard line. Koudelka with a mildly dangerous high catch of a punt, but he is an athlete, catches  punt at his 20, makes two guys miss and returns it 24 yards to give the offense great field position at the SM 44. On second down Webb hits Spraglin for 15 yards and first down and then hits Thompson for 12 and first down at AS 26 yard line. On first down we fumble on the handoff and they recover at their own 25. Kellum Hall and Mac Labhart with big hits on first down, incomplete pass and then penalty and then on third and long AS hits a long pass for 36 yards to SM 41 yard line.  END OF FIRST QUARTER.
St. Marks 14- All Saints 7.
Two real solid plays by Luke Williams on first down he attacks from safety position and nails runner after 3 yard gain and on second down he strings out blocker and gets the tackle for no gain. Short pass gives AS a first down at SM 30 yard line.  On first down Goldstein streaking in from safety spot nails runner for 3 yard gain, 2nd down   K. Hall with good QB pressure   and Law sacks QB for 7 yard loss, 3rd down is incomplete pass.  On 4th down AS misses a 43 yard field goal.
We take over on our own 33 yard line. Jones 4 yard run, Webb hits Jones with swing pass for 8 and first down at 45 yard line. Webb quick down & out to Thompson at the 50 yard line, Thompson makes a defender miss and turns it up field for a 23 yard gain.  First down at AS 32, good hole by C. Labhart and Calvillo and Jones goes for 7 yards, an AS penalty and three incomplete passes (two were drops) and Wilner hits a 37 yard field goal.
With NINE MINUTES left in the half St. Mark's 17-All Saints 7.
AS gets a long kickoff return and a 15 yard facemask penalty and they have first down on our own 21 yard line. Five running plays and another SM penalty and AS scores and PAT is good and its 17-14 SM with 4 minutes left in first half.
We start at our 25 after touchback. Webb hits Koudelka for 3 and then Webb to Thompson for 20 yards and first down at our 48 yard line. Jones a rush for 4 and then Webb to Caldwell for 22 yards to the AS 26 yard line. Its first down Webb lofts ball into end zone and Caldwell sandwiched between two defenders goes up and catches ball and falls into end zone for TD.  Our extra point was blocked and with 3 minutes left in half its SM 23-AS 14.
All Saints starts at the SM 25 yard line, good hits by Williams and Goldstein, M. Labhart with a delayed blitz gets QB for a 5 yard loss. On 3rd and 16 As hits a 49 yard pass to the SM to our 8 yard line. On first down great hustle by K. Hall as he chases QB to other end of field and makes tackle with help from Chris Roach. Second down Williams with batted ball incomplete, AS scores on QB run on third down but brought back on holding penalty, incomplete pass and then AS hits 31 yard field goal as the half expires.

HALF TIME SCORE: St. Mark's 23—All Saints 17.
We receive the second half kickoff.
Webb to Thompson for 8 yards and a Jones run gives us a first down at our own 39. Three incomplete passes (two were drops) and we are punting.  First down AS on their own 30.  On first down a fumbled pitchout and M. Labhart in position to tackle RB for an 11 yard loss.  On third down as we rush the QB we get hit for a 15 yard face mask penalty and that gives AS a first down on their own 42.Goldstein and Papin for combined hit on 1st down, two incomplete passes with Goldstein and Thompson covering and AS is punting.  We start on our own 29 yard line.  Three incomplete passes (two were drops) and we are punting. Great punt by Wilner that rolls all the way to the 11 yard line, a SIXTY YARD punt.
Two runs and short pass give AS a first down on their 31. On second and one their RB takes a short toss to our right cuts back & is hit by three or four of our guys, does a spin move and breaks away from the pile for a 69 yard TD run, it was close to having his forward progress stopped, but we did not get the call. PAT is good and with seven minutes left in third quarter AS has their first lead 24-23.
Koudelka returns kickoff 12 yards to our 19 yard line. Short run by Jones, short pass Webb to Thompson on 2nd & on third down good run by Jones for first down. Webb and Spraglin just miss on a TD bomb and on second down Webb finds Thompson for a big 26 yard pass and run and we have first down on the AS 27 yard line. On third and ten Webb to Thompson who makes a good catch in traffic for a first down on their 8 yard line. On first down their DB makes a good play in the end zone and we turn the ball over.  All Saints first down on their own 20 yard line. Their wide receiver catches a quick slant and he goes 80 yards for the TD. PAT is good.
AS 31 SM 23 with 4 minutes left in the third quarter.
Koudelka nice 16 yard run to bring kickoff back to the 37 yard line. Webb with two short passes to Thompson and Koudelka and then penalty gives us a first down.  Webb hits Caldwell for 4 and then Thompson for 7 and first down at the AS 42 yard line. Short pass to Jones for 5, a dropped pass, short run for not much and on fourth and five a tipped ball results in interception and AS has the ball at their 28 yard line.   Two short passes, a run and a penalty on All Saints and the third quarter ends with the score:
All Saints 31 - St Marks 23.

Fourth Quarter starts with AS with a 2nd and 13 from their own 37 yard line.  M. Labhart and Martinek good stop on 2nd down and on third down we blitz three LB’s and Papin comes up the sack and a 12 yard loss. Defense came up strong on this series. AS punting from their own 28 yard line.   After the punt we start at our own 38 yard line, a one yard pass completion, a batted ball and on third down their DB makes a diving catch at our 45 yard line.   On first down they hit a long pass down the middle to our four yard line and on the second down their running back powers in for a TD. Extra point is good and with nine minutes left in game it is slipping away.  All Saints 38 St Marks 23.
We start on our 25 yard line after touchback, two hard runs by Jones gives us a first down on the 36 yard line. Webb to Koudelka for 9 and two runs get zero and on fourth and one Webb hits Caldwell up the sideline for 12 yards and first down on the AS 43 yard line. We have two incomplete passes, a dropped pass and a penalty and on 4th and 15, their DB returns a turnover for 75 yards and a TD.  With six minutes left, All Saints 45 - St Marks 23.
After touch back, we start at our 25 yard line, Webb hits six straight passes, Spraglin for 14, Koudelka for 5, Thompson for 3, Jones for 4, Thompson 6 and Koudelka for 6 and we also get a pass interference penalty and we have first down. AS blitzes all their LB’s and we don’t pick it up and we lose 12 yards. Webb hits Koudelka for 8 yards and on 4th down we turn it over on a fumble.
All Saints runs the ball four straight times and game over.

NOTES:  John Webb was 33 for 60 for 361 yards and three TD’s. John Caldwell 7 catches for 138 and three TD’s, Reid Thompson caught 12 for 113 yards.  Danny Koudelka 7 catches, Kendrick Spraglin 4 receptions and Justin Jones caught three balls.  We did a lot of good things tonight, a couple of offensive and defensive breakdowns really hurt. I think the coaches and players would love to see these guys again.   Casady may be in big trouble this Friday night!!!    MD
