St. Mark's suffers first loss to St. Johns 47-17.
St. Mark’s won the coin toss and deferred the right to receive the kickoff until the second half. St. John’s ran 7plays for 3 first downs, including a 15 yard option around left end. The next play was a 30 yard run up the middle for a SJ touchdown.
Ardis Graham returned the SJ kickoff to the 30, but St. Mark’s turned over the ball on three pass plays, each incomplete. SM punted, and number 15 for SJ made a good return to the SM 48. St. Mark’s defense held SJ to force a punt, but SJ had a fake up their sleeve and completed a pass for the first down. SJ ran the option around left end for a touchdown.
Another good kickoff return by Graham gave the Lions the ball on their own 44. Joe Bush hit Cameron Kline on quick out for 7 and then completed a pass over the middle to Luke Williams for 17 for a first down. A long completion pass was called back on a holding call against SM. SM punted adb SJ took over possession. After the defense stuffed SJ on first down, Gow for SJ ran the veer to perfection following the fake man and lead blocker up the middle for about 35 yards to the SM 30. SJ handed off to the up back for 4 and followed that with a diving quarterback keeper for 9 more and a first down. SJ’s tailback ran around right end for 9 yards. St. Mark's forced a fumble and took over possession on their own 6 yard line. Bush hit Kline again for 4 and Williams again for 11, followed by an interception with SJ getting the ball inside midfield. Harrison Hewitt made a nice play tackling the pitch man for no gain ending the first quarter with SJ leading 14-0.
Dam Tweardy made a long run up the middle, which ended with a facemask penalty, giving SJ the ball on the SM 10. Gow again ran the veer fake and scored on a 10 yard run. SM blocked the point after attempt, made a mad scramble for the ball attempting to get two points, but came up just short. SJ kicker produced a touchback.
Malcolm Bowman made a strong run for 7 yards and Bush hit Williams for 9 more yards and a first down. Three consecutive incomplete passes followed and SM was forced to punt. Harlan Burk made a very nice tackle on the SJ punt return.
Gow ran up the middle for five and Mac Labhart stopped the SJ runner for 2 yards, bringing up a big 3rd and 2. Great second effort by SJ led to a 5 yard run and a first down. After two more good runs for 10 and 7 yards respectively, SJ pitched around left end for about 25 yards to the Lions 5. The Lions stiffened for three consecutive plays, but on fourth down and goal, the up back ran in for the touchdown.
When the Lions took over after another touchback, Bowman ran for 6 followed by a Bush scramble for 22 yards up the middle. Bush hit Williams for 13 and John Caldwell for 18, each for a first down. Bush picked up 4 on the next quarterback keeper and completed to John Caldwell on the 5 yard line with a facemask penalty against SJ tacked on. After a holding call against the Lions, Jacob Wilner got SM on the board with a 30 yard field goal that split the uprights.
Wilner’s pooch kick was caught by number 15 who was expecting the play. After a quick hitter for 6 yards, SJ followed up with a nice pass play to their tight end for 51 yards and their fourth touchdown of the game.
Cameron Kline returned another long kick to the 17 yard line and Bowman had a 4 yard run followed by a 21 yard pickup on a pitch play going right. Bush hit Caldwell for 9 yards, and after Bush was stuffed for no gain, he picked up the first down on the following QB sneak. SJ was called for a late hit on Kline. The offensive line gave Bush time, and he responded with a pass to Caldwell for eleven yards and a first down. He immediately hit Kline for another 11 and another first down. Bush completed to Luke Williams for a touchdown pass and reception.
On the SM kickoff, the SJ returner fumbled, but recovered it and was immediately hit by Otto Clark-Martinek ending the first half, with SM trailing 34-10.
Kline returned the opening second half kickoff to the 21, and Bush had a pass batted down on first down. SJ intercepted on second down. Two consecutive good runs by the vaunted SJ veer landed them on the Lions 12 yard line. Dan Tweardy ran the final 12 yards of the drive on first down for a SJ touchdown. Kline had a nice runback to the 31 yard line, and Bush scrambled for 13 after good coverage by SJ. Kendrick Spraglin made a 17 yard reception and Bush completed to Kline on a flair for 3 tough yards. After a tipped pass that fell to the ground, Bush hit Williams for 10 yards and Caldwell for 5 yards. The next pass was intercepted by SJ.
SM defense stiffened and forced SJ to a three and out. Kline returned the punt. Bush completed to Caldwell for 6 yards, Williams for a first down, and then found Spraglin in the end zone for an excellent touchdown, bringing the score to 41-17.
After several good plays by SJ, SM forced another turnover with a strip by Reid Thompson that was recovered by Jimmy Papin. Bush and Caldwell connected for 65 yards to the SJ 7. Four pass plays, with coverage on fourth down gave the ball to SJ on downs deep in their own territory. Gow ran for 11 yards and a first down to end the third quarter.
After three Sj runs for a first down, St. Mark’s stopped SJ for a 2 yard gain on first down, Bear Goldstein broke up a pass on second down and an attempted center screen by SJ fell harmlessly to the turf. Kline made an exciting cut back punt return to near mid field. After a fumble on first down and an incomplete pass on second down, the Lions put 5 receivers in the pattern and Bush was sacked, requiring a St. Mark’s punt. SJ ran twice for 6 yards with two good plays by the St. Mark’s front 7, but Gow got loose again around left end for a 50 yard touchdown carry. SJ missed the point after and Cameron Kline returned again up the middle to the SM 32. John Webb entered the game at quarterback after an illegal procedure on the Lions, Webb hit Cameron Kline for 7 yards. After Webb drew the SJ defensive line offsides, he found Kline again for 8 yards and a first down. Webb then threw two incomplete passes, but on third down he connected with Malcolm Bowman for a rambling 19 yard pick up and a first down. Number 3 for SJ crushed Cameron Kline on first down. After an illegal procedure on the Lions, Webb hit Caldwell for 12 and after another illegal procedure on SM, number 3 for SJ roughed up Luke Williams on a 4th down pass play, ending SM’s offensive plays for the night. SJ ran four plays, with one first down and ran out the clock for a 47-17 triumph.
Good game and excellent veer attack by SJ with two pass plays for additional plus yardage and a touchdown. SM will be ready in Tulsa on Friday for a showdown against Holland Hall.
