Last Game for SIXTEEN Seniors - Great Run!!!

Houston Kinkaid 41- St Marks 28

Kinkaid wins toss, we kickoff and initial hit by Luke Williams and Cole Labhart finishes off the runner. HK starts at their 24 yard line and get hits with 5 yard penalty. First down Stephen Rambin reads the pitch and has runner for three yard loss.  HK runs a crossing pattern in our 4 deep zone and receiver finds a seam and goes for 37 yards to our 47 yard line.  First down is holding call and its first and 20 for HK. Bubble screen pass to their star Macan Wilson #15 and he will touch the ball many times today. Nine yard completion and brought down by Jimmy Papin and Bear Goldstein.  Twelve yard pass completion and first down and tackle by Reid Thompson. Wilson runs twice for 12 yards and first down at our 24. Good open field tackle by Goldstein on the second run. Wilson runs two more times for 8 yards Mac Labhart on both stops, one with Rambin and one with Otto Martinek. First down on our 16 yard line. Their QB finds a hole and runs for a 16 yard TD. Their offense has a lot of moving parts and misdirection plays. PAT is good and its 7-0 with 8 minutes left in first quarter.
Danny Koudelka with a 13 yard return and we start at the 24 yard line. First down quick throw John Webb   to John Caldwell, good block by Koudelka and he goes for 10. Caldwell fakes a quick slant and turns it up field and   Webb perfect throw and good route and it’s a 32 yard gain to HK 34 yard line.  Webb back to pass and hits Kendrick Spraglin on a streak and Spraglin good over the shoulder catch and we have first down on the 2.  Koudelka in motion left to write and Webb hits him with quick pass and Danny untouched into end zone.  TD.    PAT by Jacob Wilner is good.    It’s a four play 76 yard drive.  John Webb four for four to three different receivers. Good protection by the offensive line.
SEVEN TO SEVEN with SEVEN minutes left in first quarter.  It will be back and forth all day!!!!

We kickoff and nice open field tackle by Harrison Hewitt, welcome back #22, has not played since the MART game with knee injury. And HK starts at the 19 yard line. Martinek beats his blocker and goes high and Papin goes low for no gain. HK hits first down pass and tackle by Hewitt. Defense will hold here on three plays.  First down Rambin strings out the pitch and good hard hit by Goldstein for gain of one. Second down quick pass to slot guy with two blockers, good team defense by Hewitt, Rambin and Goldstein for another ONE YARD gain. Third down and incomplete pass and good tight coverage by Hewitt.    KINKAID is punting.   Punt is downed at our 32 yard line
Webb to Spraglin for 8 yards, good block by Koudelka.  Thompson finds hole in the zone, Webb hits him, and Reid makes a guy miss and 16 yard gain to HK 44.  Next play Caldwell beat his DB, but Kinkaid guy holds him and its 10 yard pass interference.  We then stall.   Webb to Caldwell for 5, Webb to Thompson for 2 and Reid is walloped but holds ball.  We misfire on two passes and HK takes over on downs at their 27 yard line.
Kinkaid then goes on 10 play 73 yard drive that ends on a one yard TD on the first play of the second quarter. 8 runs, 2 passes and a big 15 yard penalty on us.  First down is hit with Kellam Hall and Goldstein, second down with M. Labhart and Martinek. Incomplete pass and unnecessary roughness penalty and its first down on our 48 yard line. Hewitt and Goldstein with hit on QB run, Papin and M. Labhart hold Wilson for one on second down, Wilson gets a first down with hits from M. Labhart and George Law. Good catch by their receiver on a streak route in traffic and HK has first down on our 2. We hold for two plays on Wilson. First down K. Hall beats his blocker with the tackle, second and goal it’s M. Labhart with stop and on third and goal,  Papin with great play to split two blockers and get a shot on runner but RB has the momentum and he is in.
PAT is good.
HK 14 -  SM 7 with the second quarter just starting.
Kinkaid kicks out of bounds and we start at the 30.
On second down, real nice timing pattern with Webb to Caldwell down and out and first down on 40.
Next play, good block on end by Dominic Garcia and Tommy Gudmundsson on RT and Thompson cracks back on LB and Malcolm Bowman turns corner for 8 yards.  15 yard penalty on HK and we have first down on HK 37 yard line. Good pickup and communication on a line stunt between Michael Doorey and Cole Labhart on the previous play. Short pass to Thompson for 2 yards on third down, Kinkaid has two deep zone, Spraglin splits the two safeties and is wide open, and Webb hits him in stride for a 35 yard TD. Nice clean pocket, defensive end did get loose and Bowman puts a shot on him to give Webb that extra second. Wilner PAT is good its 14-14 with 10 minutes left in second quarter.

SM 14 Kinkaid 14.

Big kickoff return by their Wilson guy and its first down on our 41. Kinkaid passes 5 times for 32 yards and runs twice for four yards and they have fourth and one at our ten.   Good hit by Goldstein & Law on first down. Good pass break up by Luke Williams going high in the end zone to save a TD. Real nice one on one tackle by Papin to throw runner for loss.  So we get back to the fourth and one play, M. Labhart scrapes off tackle and Goldstein is lined up on line of scrimmage and they both combine for good hit & stop on their star Wilson. The referee unbelievably looks at spot and says first down, a bunch of our knucklehead dads, including this knucklehead   dad yell for” MEASUREMENT”. It is close, they bring out the chains and LO AND BEHOLD- we have stopped them. Great play on fourth down. We start at our own ten.

We go three and out on offense and Law is kicking from the goal line. Doorey is first guy downfield and as he approaches the punt returner, he is grabbed and spun around and an obvious holding penalty RIGHT IN FRONT of the worthless back judge and its not called. Returner runs back punt for 32 yards and its first down HK at our 17 yard line.  HK runs ANOTHER short crossing pattern and all that they are trying to do is a PICK PLAY and it works and Goldstein’s man, runs into Rambin and it gives Rambin’ s guy that extra step and it’s a completed pass to our three yard line. Its offensive pass interference and its not called.
Next play is direct snap to Wilson and he goes around our right end for a TD. PAT is good and its

Kinkaid 21 SM 14 with 6 minutes left in second quarter.

Koudelka takes kickoff twenty yards and we start on the HK 30 yard line. Short pass over the middle to Justin Jones and he turns it up field for 20 yards. Good blocks by Victor Calvillo, C. Labhart and Doorey and Webb hits Thompson on a slant and Reid goes for 15 to the HK 36 yard line.  Next play Garcia hits the DE so hard that he also ends up taking out a LB also, GOOD STUFF, Webb to Caldwell for 4 yards and 7 yards on the next play. Kinkaid also hit with a 15 yard penalty and we have first down on the 12 yard line.
Webb hits Caldwell on a slant, John blasts over one tackler, another guy hits him and at  the two another tackler comes from behind and ball comes free, I watched this play several times, not the best angle but I think Caldwell is down and its first down at the 2. But again, the infamous back judge rules a fumble into end zone.

Kinkaid gets the ball at the 20. They then go on 10 play, three first down drive that will stall at our 30 yard line. K. Hall good first hit and then Williams with a bigger stick and Chris Roach finish off runner. Martinek with a spin move, M. Labhart and K. Hall bring down Wilson after a 3 yard run. Incomplete pass with Roach in coverage. On 4th and four, K. Hall with pressure on QB almost gets a pass knock down but QB hits Wilson on short flare pass and Martinek hustling downfield gets the unassisted tackle. First down at our 33 yard line. First down   K.Hall, Garcia (playing NT) and Martinek for stop on short run. Second down incomplete pass with K. Hall in coverage, third down long pass incomplete with Williams in coverage. FOURTH down we blitz all linebackers but QB gets it away but receiver slips and Roach had the coverage anyway.
We get the ball at the 30 yard line with less than a minute left. Webb scrambles for 6 yards and Thompson peels back and levels a DB. Next play is a dropped pass, Webb to Koudelka on short pass and then we have another dropped pass and its halftime.

KINKAID 21 ST  MARKS 14     HALFTIME

We receive short kickoff and start at our 28 yard line.  Webb to Thompson for 10 yards and first down. We then go three incomplete passes and have to punt. Good punt by Law and Kinkaid starts at their 24.
First down-K. Hall from the offside LB chases RB to other side and he combines with Goldstein for no gain. Good hustling play by Kellam.  On second down HK goes for the bomb and Thompson easily reads the pump and go  and is perfect position and intercepts on the 44 yard line and his momentum gets him tackled on the 42 of SM. We get hit for a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty after the turnover and we start at the 27 yard line.
First down, quick throw to Caldwell, Thompson with lead block, Caldwell beats one tackler and goes for 16 yards and FIRST DOWN.   First down short pass to Thompson for three, second down is incomplete pass and it sure looked like pass interference on DB covering Caldwell. Third down, we don’t pick up the blitz and John Webb never sees him coming and is really hit hard, they rushed six on our five linemen and it’s a loss of seven and we are punting.  George Law with a pretty athletic play on high snap and has that Presence of Mind to get kick away for 40 yards.
Kinkaid starts at their 23.  They run six plays, 4 passes, 3 are complete, and two runs and get three first downs. Good hard tackle by Goldstein on one of the completed passes, Papin first hit and Mac Labhart buries #15 Wilson on short run, Goldstein & Williams combine for stop on quick pass, Papin and Goldstein low and Cameron Baxley high for stop on QB run. It is now second and seven at our 47 yard line, it looks like a well-designed coverage by Coach Labhart,  it looks on film that it is one on  one coverage with Thompson on outside receiver and one on one coverage by Luke Williams on slot guy- #15 Wilson. As the ball is snapped, Thompson reads the quick throw to slot receiver and jumps the short route or it was designed for him to stay in flat, he cuts in front of receiver and goes easily  untouched for a 52 yard PICK SIX TD.
   YEE HAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There was a collective gasp and some pessimistic thought as QB Webb was hit on previous series and as the doctor and trainers are working on him on the sideline. This TD really got the crowd back into the positive spirit!!!!!
PAT is good by Wilner and we are TIED-  21  ALL with 6 minutes left in third quarter.

Kinkaid starts on the 32 yard line after kickoff. Tackle by Williams on kickoff. First down, short gain and tackle by Thompson. Third down, they hit a complete pass and we are hit for a roughing the passer penalty.  First down on SM 33 yard line. Nice middle screen to Wilson and a solid open field, saving TD tackle by Papin.  On first down inside handoff   and Papin beats his blocker and good tackle for 3 yard gain. On second down Williams with a diving block of pass to save a TD.  On third down Cole Labhart is playing NT and is held and refs catch it and ten yard penalty.  Re- play third down and incomplete pass with Thompson good positioning and coverage and on 4th down receiver drops the ball.
We take over at our 28 yard line with about three minutes left in third quarter.
We go nowhere, have   a high snap for loss on third down and Law is punting and it’s a 37 yard punt, first down for Kinkaid on its on 34 yard line after punt and five yard HK penalty.

Kinkaid will have the ball for eight plays including the first play of the fourth quarter. Kinkaid will get two first downs and one was result of a SM penalty. So defense is fired up and there is energy as the score is tied late in third quarter. Good defensive plays, hard hit by Goldstein on QB run. Goldstein, Williams and M. Labhart all with good coverage/positioning on a quick post incomplete.  M. Labhart with first hit and runner nailed by Baxley and Martinek.  Papin, Goldstein and Rambin all fighting off blockers to hold #15 Wilson to short gain. Papin nice read on QB mis direction run and solo tackle for no gain.  Incomplete deep play- action post pass with Thompson in coverage. Third down, screen pass to their tight end, K. Hall reads it and is able to turn runner into middle of field and Law from opposite DE is hustling and makes the one on one tackle. GOOD JOB. Fourth down and five on our 32 yard line and QB throws short and we get the ball.

21-21  with  11:50 left in game.  First down SM at our 32.

Webb to Caldwell and Webb to Thompson, two short passes and we have one first down. We then have a holding penalty and we stall and have to punt. Those ten yard holding penalties are killers.  We punt and HK starts at their own 31 yard line and there is ten minutes left in game.
Kinkaid has a 7 play, 69 yard drive for a touchdown. Two big pass completions were the key. Some good defensive plays here;   Papin and M. Labhart on a run blitz holds the Wilson guy for two yards;   incomplete pass with Roach in coverage; they got us on a halfback pass- it was a well-designed play, they had three receivers to our left, and did a quick pitch to their RB, going to the left and the short side and we are attacking and he stops and throws, it looked like one of our plays that Coach Epperson has in our arsenal.  So sometimes, I know it is hard to do, but they have good coaches too and they got us.  And it was still a great catch to complete the play!!!   Cole Labhart first hit on RB then gets help with Papin, and Goldstein. Rambin and Williams combine for hit downfield on RB. On first and goal from SM 5, Wilson finds a hole and scores. PAT is good.

Eight minutes left in game—KINKAID 28,  ST MARKS 21.

Kickoff- Koudelka catches the ball on the left side, right at the 25 yard line, gets two initial blocks-one by Kellam Hall and Otto Martinek gets so tangled up with the defensive player that that Kinkaid player loses his focus and Danny goes through the hole created by these two blocks.  Within seconds Koudelka is free, he evades a diving tackle and has only the kicker in front of him, and he sets up the kicker with a good move and then sees a tackler coming from his right side and cuts behind him and outraces two guys to the corner of the end zone.  It is pretty cool to see our sideline going nuts and the crowd in the stands  are all cheering , and we knew that Bob was there in spirit, as DK scores!!!  TOUCHDOWN- ANOTHER BIG PLAY FOR SM!!!!

Wilner PAT is good and we are tired at 28 ALL----- with 7:35 left.    WOW!!!!

After short kickoff, Kinkaid starts at the 42 yard line. They get two first downs on two successive plays and they are then stopped.  Papin beats a blocker and goes low and Baxley finishes him off by going high for no gain.  Good open field tackle by Williams on long run, he was our last defender. So HK has a first down at our TWELVE YARD LINE.
First down their blocker tackles Martinek and they get a ten yard penalty. They take a shot on a streak pattern and Roach is able to push him out of bounds-incomplete.  Second down is middle screen to Wilson, Papin reads it, breaks between two blockers for first hit and Martinek hustling up field finishes him off for a short gain. Good D!!!!  HK penalized for 15 yards on offensive pass interference- THE PICK PLAY—but they have been doing it all day.  Jimmy Papin dropping deep on pass coverage with a pass break up on third down and HK punts with tied score at 28.
We start at the 20 yard line.
Two receivers left, on short side of field, quick throw to Spraglin, Victor Calvillo chips the rusher and he is leading the way outside, T. Gudmundsson hustles downfield and gets the safety,   Doorey, Garcia and C. Labhart control their three guys and Webb gets rid of it quickly, Thompson good block on outside DB and Kendrick splits the blocks and goes for 38 yards to the HK 42 yard line.   Malcolm Bowman back in, has a hurting foot,  makes a good run and cuts back and you see that lovely yellow flag coming into the picture- I watched this play from several views and several times and could never see the holding call- but that is what the call is.  We do our trick play of the day, three receivers left and Thompson gets the quick throw from Webb and Reid throws to Bowman down the sideline on a wheel route and it’s just tipped away.  Well-designed play but we just miss.
Law with a bouncing punt, good hustle by Goldstein and Doorey who both beat their blockers and down the punt at the two yard line. So with about FIVE minutes left in game, it is 28-28 and Kinkaid has to go 98 yards.     MY HEART!!!!

Kinkaid, I hate to say, goes 98 yards in 8 plays and gets 4 first downs and scores with 1 minute and 13 seconds left.

I think John Webb is hurt and can’t throw with his usual accuracy, the defense has been on the field for the whole second half as we score on an interception and kickoff return, it is hot and Mac Labhart and other guys are cramping up and it is the perfect storm in a bad sense.

Good defensive plays on this series by a hustling Rambin going downfield for a tackle, Cole Labhart going down the line and putting a hit on Wilson for small gain. C. Labhart fighting off two blockers and combining with George Law on short gain. Roach, K. Hall, Goldstein and Williams gang tackle for short gain. Good open field tackle by Williams on large gain. Papin, Goldstein, Martinek and Rambin with a no gain stop. They hit a short pass and it goes for a 42 yard TD

KINKAID 35 SM 28 with one minute and 13 seconds left.

Short kickoff and we start at the 33 yard line.  Webb to Caldwell for 6, Webb to Caldwell for 4 and first down.  Garcia is handling the right DE on his blocking assignment and DE reads the play and makes an athletic play and gets an interception and goes the distance.
PAT is no good and its Kinkaid 41 SM 27 with 45 seconds left in game.

Justin Jones with a 30 yard kickoff return. But time is low.  We complete three passes but run out of time. And game ends on the Kinkaid 33 yard line.

Final Score Kinkaid 41 St Marks 28.

NOTES:
John Webb was 31 for 48 for 326 and two TD’s, John Caldwell 12 catches for 107 yards ,Reid Thompson  7 catches for 56 yards, Kendrick Spraglin 6 catches for 132 yards and one TD.  Danny Koudelka 2 catches for 5 yards and one receiving TD. Malcolm Bowman caught 3 and Justin Jones caught one.
Kinkaid had 90 offensive snaps ( 47 runs and 43 pass attempts). That was tough on our defense on a pretty warm afternoon. The long day for the defense was compounded by the two big TD’s which gave the D, no time to rest.  Reid Thompson 52 yard interception PICK SIX TD and Danny Koudelka 75 yard Kickoff Return.  Their star Macan Wilson #15 who has accepted a football scholarship to Northwestern touched the ball 32 times from the line of scrimmage and returned a couple of kicks also. He accounted for 218 yards of offense, not counting kick returns.
I used the Dallas Morning Stats for the whole year and here is what they showed- I don’t know if they ever added the Oklahoma game to these.
John Webb was 226 for 364 for 3152 yards and THIRTY TWO TD’s. Walter Johnson also had a TD pass.
Justin Jones carried 82 yards for 444 yards and 4 TD’s and Malcolm Bowman was 53 carries for 289 yards and 4 TD’s.
Receiving: John Caldwell 72 catches for 1250 yards and 13 TD’s. Reid Thompson 50 catches for 588 yards, 5 receiving TD’s and the TD on interception. Kendrick Spraglin 42 catches for 802 yards and 7 TD’s. Danny Koudelka 34 catches for 287 yards and 5 receiving TD’s and also the kickoff return TD. Malcolm Bowman caught 10 balls, Harrison Hewitt caught 9 and all in the Mart game. Justin Jones caught 8 and one TD. Clayton Roberts had one receiving TD.  Jacob Wilner had 4 field goals and 35 extra points for a total of 47 points. John Webb scored a TD, also Stephen Rambin on interception TD. Luke Williams had a pick six interception TD that was called back on a penalty well behind the play, but I wanted to mention it.
In nine games we scored 317 and we allowed 198 and we called off the dogs in two games at halftime.
GREAT YEAR OFFENSIVE LINEMAN: Center Michael Doorey, Guards Cole Labhart and Tommy Gudmundsson, Tackles Victor Calvillo and Dominic Garcia.

Thank you to the captains for great leadership: Garcia, Goldstein, P. Gudmundsson, Papin and Thompson.
Paul you were dealt a tough blow but you handled it with class!!!!

Finally, we had 16 seniors play their last game on Saturday. I have made every game home and away for the last three years (yes, bus trips are fun). I made a list of these guys and the number of games that they started in the last three years and I came up with 210 games .  So a two year starter who was not injured would have the number of 18 games.  So 210 is a pretty big figure,   especially when we had our share of injuries, when we had guys who didn’t play all three years. So seniors, be proud!!!!!!!

Next year: we got  three big guys coming back on Offense: Webb, Caldwell and Bowman and two O line starters in Calvillo and T. Gudmundsson.  And J. Jones will be fitting in there somewhere.
On defense: we also have three big guys coming back: Williams, M. Labhart and K. Hall and Baxley will also be in the mix.    So juniors, its your game now!!!!!

Thank you to HEAD COACH Epperson and ASST Coaches:  Couch, Jackson, Labhart and Rivera.  Great season and fun year.

Thanks for reading.

St. Mark's Shines at Homecoming!!!

St. Marks  49   Greenhill  7.

Chilly 50 degree Homecoming night.
We win the toss and defer.
Jacob Wilner kicks off and Jimmy Papin first contact at the 15 yard line, he goes low and Kellum Hall goes high and puts a shot on the runner. Greenhill starts at their 16 yard line.    First down Mac Labhart takes on lead blocker and they fumble but recover. Third down nice open field tackle by Thompson and its THREE AND OUT.     Short punt and we are hit with a 15 yard penalty and we start at the 33 yard line.
FIRST down and a well-designed play, three receivers to the right, John Caldwell and John Webb both fake a quick hitch pattern and the two outside DBacks jump the route and Thompson runs right by the DB and is ten yards past him and Webb hits him in stride at the GH 43 yard line and Reid runs and finally drags a tackler into the end zone. 67 yard TD pass and catch. GREAT START.  Greenhill rushed four and O line with a perfect pocket.  Wilner PAT is good.

SM 7 GH 0     Ten minutes left in first quarter.
We kickoff and GH starts at their 25 yard line. They then go on an eleven play drive that gets them three first downs and they then attempt a 32 yard field goal but get a bad snap and no kick. FOUR minutes left in the first quarter. Good defensive plays on this drive: M. Labhart chases RB on a sweep and he goes high and Thompson goes low on runner. Nice open field tackle by M. Labhart on following play. Papin buries a runner for no gain on a run blitz. Luke Williams good hit on off tackle run. Bear Goldstein good tackle and coverage on short completed pass. Papin, Goldstein and Stephen Rambin combine on gang tackle for short gain. Rambin nice tackle on flare pass for little gain.  On third and two at our 11 yard line, inside handoff and runner is buried by a host of Lions led by Otto Martinek for a four yard loss.
We take over on our 26 yard line. Fumble that we recover, incomplete pass and on third and 12, Webb hits Thompson on a quick slant, nice catch on low ball and Reid splits the safeties and goes for 36 yards and first down.  The Webb to Thompson connection has two completions for over 100 yards in the first quarter!!! GOOD STUFF.    Incomplete pass, DB has pass interference on John Caldwell and that gives us first down on GH 25 yard line. Caldwell runs a streak pattern, Webb from the shotgun throws the ball from the 33 yard line and releases ball when Caldwell and the DB are running side by side at the 20, Caldwell gets a step and the ball floats down at the goal line. A picture perfect pitch and catch!!! Touchdown.  Greenhill sent SEVEN on the rush, each O lineman controlled his guy, and Malcolm Bowman (as usual) picks up one of the free blitzers and the other LB just STOPS. Tommy Gudmundsson who has started all year at RG is injured and Cameron Baxley has stepped right in and is doing the job.  Anytime OUR SIX guys can block THEIR SEVEN guys, good things will happen!!

Wilner PAT is good.
SM 14 GH  0 with 3 minutes left in first quarter.
We kickoff and guys are flying down on kickoff team, Martinek, Papin, Luke Williams and K. Hall all meet at the ball carrier and returner is nailed at the TWELVE yard line.   Greenhill has a six play drive that gets two first downs and they end up punting at the end of the first quarter. Good D plays; Thompson good hit and tackle after completed pass. Good solo tackle Thompson on a sweep.  K. Hall on a blitz and knocks down pass attempt. Greenhill good rolling punt that they down on our one yard line.
First down, short curl pass to Danny Koudelka, he breaks a tackle and runs up sideline for 28 yards and first down. Webb back to pass and Kendrick Spraglin with a streak pattern and Webb hits him in stride at the GH 44 yard line and Kendrick shrugs off the DB and goes the distance for a 71 yard TD.  TWO plays and 99 yards WOW!! Wilner PAT is good.
SM 21 GH 0 with 11 minutes left in second quarter.
Short kickoff and GH starts at the 33 yard line.   Mac Labhart and K. Hall chasing QB out of bounds for no gain on QB run.  We get hit with a 15 yard penalty and GH hits a 21 yard pass to our 28 yard line. Chris Roach one on one coverage on streak pattern, he has good inside position and catches ball at its highest point and fights off receiver for good interception at our 6 yard line.  We have a rare offense three and out and are punting from our end zone.  Greenhill fair catches punt at our 39 yard line.   Greenhill gets a negative 4 yards on three plays and they are punting.     Martinek, K. Hall and Robert Keeler combine for no gain on a run.  Good one on one tackle by K. Hall on swing pass for a loss.
We start on our 20 after the GH punt.   Webb to Spraglin on slant for 20 yards and Kendrick is tough to bring down. Incomplete pass and on second down, We run the exact play that Thompson scored on our first series but this time the pass goes to Caldwell on the quick strike behind line of scrimmage, Dominic Garcia out to get a LB, Koudelka and Thompson blocking the two DB’s, Caldwell makes a guy miss and then outruns and pulls away from two defenders for a 60 yard TD.
Wilner PAT good. Seven minutes left in 2nd qtr.
SM 28  GH 0.
Greenhill then goes three and out, K. Hall and Papin combine for loss. Thompson and George Law with stop on short pass.
Koudelka fields a bouncing punt on the 16 yard line and then goes on a great individual effort and goes for 32 yards and at least FIVE guys had a shot of him. The last defender makes a shoestring tackle or he would have gone the distance. Good job!!   We did get hit for a block in the back penalty.
Webb to Spraglin for 16 yards on the bubble screen.  First down, screen pass to left side/short side, Michael Doorey and Cole Labhart block their guy and then release and go downfield as Malcolm Bowman catches and starts the run, good job also by Victor Calvillo who takes his guy out of the play, Koudelka with block downfield, Doorey & C. Labhart hustling down field and they get their second block, Caldwell screens his DB and Bowman with that great vision is cutting across the field. Bowman finally forced out of bounds after a 51 yard run after catch on the GH 22. Next play Koudelka beats the LB and splits the two safeties and nice touch pass by Webb over the head of LB and Danny catches ball at 5 yard line and scores.  A 22 yard TD.
Wilner PAT is good it is 35 to zero with 3 minutes left in first half.
Henry Woram with first hit on gang tackle on kickoff and GH starts at their 35 yard line.   K. Hall and Papin combine AGAIN for one yard loss. Rambin and Martinek and Papin combine for no gain. Nice tackle Roach on short pass, Penalty gives GH a first down on the 35 yard line.
Stephen Rambin reads the bubble screen as the LT comes out to block him, he cuts in front of the receiver, catches ball cleanly and cuts back on the QB and goes for a 35 yard PICK SIX touchdown. Well done!!  Showed some speed getting away from the intended receiver.    Wilner PAT is good and with 30 seconds left in first half it is:

St Marks 42- Greenhill 0.
HALFTIME.

Third Quarter most of the Offense starters are sitting. Offensive line has Sam Daniels at center, the guards are Ben Naftalis and Cameron Baxley, and the tackles are Victor Calvillo and Michael Mulholland. Walter Johnson at QB, Justin Jones RB and the receivers are: Travis Nadalini, Clayton Roberts, Andrew Patison and Corson Purnell.  Some tough inside running by Jones but we punt on 4th down.
On defense Andrew Gatherer is in but rest of starters are playing. Greenhill goes on 8 play drive that gets them one first down and we hold on a fourth and 3. Good plays/hits: K. Hall & M Labhart on tackle for no gain, Martinek and Papin on a stop, Rambin & Law for no gain. Big hit by M. Labhart on a running back on the 4th and three.    We are running a big dose of Jones, get one first down and miss a field goal.   Greenhill starts at the 28 yard line. They go on an 8 play drive that finally nets them a touchdown.  We did make some defensive changes, Abeer Karim, Lendon Hall, Justin Jones, Henry Woram, Robert Keeler, Kyle Weinstein, Corson Purnell and Cole Labhart playing LB.
SM 42 Greenhill 7 with ten minutes left in game.
Koudelka good kickoff return to the 40. Johnson hits Nadalini for 6 yards, Jones rushes for 13 and first down on GH 42. Johnson quick pass to Clayton Roberts, gets a block and outrun the defenders for a 42 yard TD. Always nice to get a new face into the scoring party!!!
Wilner with his seventh PAT and its:
SM 49 Greenhill  7.
Greenhill starts at their 30. Good tackles by Jones and Karim.  Cole Labhart and Karim combine for a stop. Keeler with a nice spin move for a tackle.  And the game is over.

NOTES: John Webb playing first half only,  goes 11 for 17 for 396 yards and FIVE TOUCHDOWNS.    Receiving: Spraglin 3 for 107 and TD, Thompson 2 for 103 and a TD, Caldwell 2 for 85 and 2 TD’s, Bowman 2 for 51, Koudelka 2 for 50 and TD, Clayton Roberts 1 for 42 and TD. Travis Nadalini 1 for 6.  Walter Johnson passing was 2 for 3 for 48 yards and TD.  Justin Jones 9 carries for 34 yards.  Always good when the D scores and Rambin TD on 35 yard interception. Another well done job to the O line, no sacks and very little pressure on QB Webb.
In the south division of SPC: three Houston schools ended with 5-1 SPC records. I don’t know the tiebreakers but   Episcopal of Bellaire is #1 seed and Kincaid is #2 seed.
We play Kincaid at 3PM on Sat Nov 3rd at St Marks and Holland Hall will travel to Episcopal Bellaire in Houston.   The winners of these two games will play in Bedford on Nov 10th, at 4PM for the CHAMPIONSHIP.  Let’s have a big crowd and lots of noise on SATURDAY.

FINALLY   at the PEP RALLY on Friday honoring the senior football players. Two executives of Ford Motor Corp presented John Webb with a real nice trophy as Private School Player of the week for his performance against ESD.
Coach Couch forwarded me a link to the YouTube video on QB Webb.

Hello Playoffs!!!!!!!!!

St Marks 44  -Holland Hall 14

We win the toss and defer. Jacob Wilner with the kickoff and we make the tackle at the 29 yard line. First down Stephen Rambin strings the play out and Chris Roach with the nice unassisted tackle. SM penalty gives HH a first down.  First down Jimmy Papin on run blitz nails runner, second down Bear Goldstein hard hit for one yard gain and on third down Papin again hits low on a run blitz and Reid Thompson high and it’s a gain of one and HH is punting. We will call it a FOUR AND OUT—but defense is setting the TONE!!
HH punts and ball is downed at our 23 and its time for the Coach Epperson and John Webb show to begin. Webb rolls left and hits Danny Koudelka for 9; third down Webb to Thompson first down pass for 6 yards.  Second down screen pass to Malcolm Bowman for 4, Webb short roll right hits Thompson on a perfect pass for 8 yards on down & out and First Down. Next play Thompson beats the LB and Webb reads it and hits him between the LB’s and safeties and Reid goes for 24 yards to the HH 28 yard line.  First down, three receivers to left, John Caldwell alone on right side. Webb quick throw to Caldwell on quick slant, Caldwell catches ball, is hit by three guys and does a spin and keeps his feet and balance and rambles into end zone, TOUCHDOWN. Wilner PAT is good.
SM 7 HH 0 with Seven minutes left in First Qtr.
We kickoff and good coverage and HH starts at the 23 yard line. HH runs six plays, gets one first down, good tackle by Kellum Hall for loss, Mac Labhart and Jimmy Papin combine for one yard gain with help from Cameron Baxley, Luke Williams with pass defense and almost has a pick with good hit on receiver by Bear Goldstein. On third down, good QB pressure by George Law and good closing speed by Chris Roach who belts receiver as ball arrives. Incomplete and HH is punting. So defense in two drives has given up only two first downs and two punts.   Short punt that rolls out of bounds on our 37 yard line.
First down Webb under pressure and throws it away, second down incomplete pass as it appears that receiver runs the wrong route—remember these two incomplete passes as QB Webb will not have many more for the rest of the night. On third and ten, three receivers left, Caldwell alone on short side/right side, Caldwell runs a streak and Webb perfect pass over the outstretched hands of DB at the HH thirty yard line and runs untouched and it’s a 63 yard TOUCHDOWN. Wilner PAT is good.
SM 14 - HH 0 with 4 minutes left in first quarter.
Wilner with a tough to handle bouncing kickoff and good coverage again and HH starts at the 15 yard line. First down K. Hall, Goldstein and M. Labhart with the gang tackle, second down QB pressure by Papin and incomplete pass   and on third down K.Hall and Rambin meet at QB but he gets it off and good pass defense by Luke Williams on drag pass as he bats the ball away on solid coverage with the tight end.
THREE AND OUT!!!!  HH punts and Danny Koudelka with an 11 yard return, but we are hit for a ten yard penalty and we start at our 33 yard line.  First down Malcolm Bowman with that good vision bounces outside between good blocks by Dominic Garcia and Tommy Gudmundsson, Caldwell cracks back on LB and Thompson chips two guys downfield and Bowman goes for 23 yards. First down on HH 44 yard line, Webb to Caldwell for no yards and on 2nd & ten- Caldwell and Thompson with a crossing pattern, Caldwell slants across the middle, Webb hits him in stride at the 35 and Caldwell outruns the two safeties for a 44 yard TD. Real nice pocket on this TD, Michael Doorey and Cole Labhart double teamed the guard, Victor Calvillo took the left tackle and both Garcia and Gudmundsson control their men. The line did such a good job that Bowman had nobody to block—that’s a good thing!!! Wilner PAT is good with less than 2 minutes left in first quarter.
SM 21 - HH 0.

GREAT kickoff coverage again with M. Labhart & K. Hall and Holland Hall starts on their 10 yard line.
Holland Hall than has a nine play drive that gives them three first downs but their drive stalls as we hold them on a fourth and two on the SM 46 yard line. Some good defensive plays on this drive. Goldstein unassisted tackle holding runner for a one yard gain. Rambin good QB hit on a completed pass.  M. Labhart & K. Hall on run blitzes holding runner for short gain. Papin and Goldstein string out a sweep for little yards. Incomplete pass and good coverage by Roach on sideline pass. Baxley beats his blocker & makes first contact with runner and K. Hall with good spin move and Papin filling the hole and Otto Martinek coming from offside end finish off the runner.  On fourth and three  HH goes into punt formation and punter runs the ball, K. Hall chases from the offside and with help from Papin and Luke Williams hold him for one yard and we get the ball.  A strange call from HH.  First quarter did end during their drive.
Eleven minutes left in second quarter. We have the ball at our own 45 yard line.  First down Webb hits Kendrick Spraglin with a 38 yard bomb on a fly pattern.  First down a rare incomplete pass and again to this observer it looked like receiver ran wrong route. Second down three receivers to the right, Koudelka closest receiver, he drags across middle, Webb hits him, Danny gets a screen block by Spraglin, goes up the sideline and fakes out a DB at the two and strolls in. 17 yard pass and catch Webb to Koudelka. Touchdown.
Wilner PAT is good.   28 to 0  with 10 minutes left in first half.
Another solid kickoff coverage play, best game that these kickoff guys have had all year. Good hustle by K. Hall, Williams and Abeer Karim who came from the far side and returner is down at the 15. The kickoff coverage team is the hardest to determine who is who on the film. I don’t mean to slight anybody if I made a mistake.
First Down HH-two good run defense plays, on first down Rambin with initial hit and Reid Thompson finishes off runner, second down Law with help from K. Hall and Papin for short gain. Two plays six yards. Third down and we jump offside. First down and Thompson in deep coverage strips receiver of ball, incomplete. Good play.  Second down M. Labhart puts a good hit on the runner in the backfield and Papin and Martinek help finish him off. Third down M. Labhart blitzing up the middle puts a shot on QB but he gets the ball away and it’s completed in front of Thompson, but Reid makes a sure tackle and it’s a nine yard gain but one yard short of first down. Fourth and one and HH decides to punt, down 28 to zero????
Koudelka 12 yard punt return and we start at the SM 37. A run of nothing, Webb to Spraglin for 9 yards and a dropped pass and we are punting for the first time.
HH takes over on their own 33.
First down K. Hall and Papin with the stop, second down they FORGET to block M. Labhart and he smacks the runner. We have penalty and its first down for HH. K. Hall and Roach for tackle on a sweep. M. Labhart good hit on QB and good pass coverage by Roach for incomplete pass, Williams leads a gang tackle on a 5 yard run. We have a major penalty and HH has first down on the SM 35 yard line. Robert Keeler at nose guard and he has penetration and helps with tackle on short gain. Luke Williams with solid unassisted tackle. Holland Hall keeps pounding the ball and gets two more first downs on our 24 and 13 yard line. Good hits by Williams, Law and Papin. HH finally beats our DB with a slant pass for a TD and with 30 seconds left in half it is-  SM 28 - HH 7.
HALF TIME.

We start at the 25 after touchback on the kickoff.
Webb to Spraglin for one yard and second down is incomplete pass. Third down, good catch by Thompson and he goes for 17 yards on pass from Webb. Webb to Caldwell on nice down and out timing play for 14 yards.  On second down quick screen to Caldwell, Garcia with good block to spring him and Caldwell down the sideline and is knocked out of bounds at the two. I thought he got the pylon and scored. Good blocks on the right side of line with Doorey, Gudmundsson and Garcia on first down and Bowman with a quick move goes outside and scores.  PAT is blocked.
SM 34 HH 7      Nine minutes left in third quarter.
Good tackle by Luke Williams on kickoff and HH starts at the 27 yard line. First down Goldstein with a hit after one yard gain. Second down pass behind receiver and on third down M. Labhart knocks ball down at line of scrimmage. Three and Out.    Koudelka fair catch on punt at our 32.
First down no room for Bowman to run, second down quick pass to Thompson for 6 yards. Third down HH blitzes two and combines it with a line stunt; Garcia takes tackle wide, Calvillo controls his tackle. Doorey takes NG, Gudmundsson comes behind Doorey and gets the MLB and C. Labhart ends up blocking two guys and Webb has a clean pocket and he hits Caldwell in stride at the 40 yard line and Caldwell has his fourth TD for a 65 yard pitch and catch.  Wilner PAT good and its 41 to 7 with 7 minutes left in third quarter.
We kickoff and Henry Woram first guy to ball carrier and Luke Williams and Mac Labhart finish him off and these guys are flying downfield, returner is downed at the EIGHT YARD LINE.  Good deep and high kickoffs by Wilner.  First down solo tackle by K. Hall, second down initial hit by Papin and runner finished off by M. Labhart and Andrew Gatherer. Third down incomplete pass and its 3 and out.
They punt and we take over at the HH 43 yard line. Webb, Bowman, Garcia, Doorey, Caldwell, Thompson, and Spraglin are done for the night.
Walter Johnson at QB, Justin Jones at RB, Michael Mulholland and Ben Naftalis are on the O line. Receivers are Clayton Roberts, Andrew Pattison, and Travis Nadalini.
Johnson carries once for 5 yards and J. Jones carries 5 times for 28 yards, some tough inside running and Wilner hits a 32 yard field goal with one minute left in third quarter.
St Marks 44 - Holland hall 7.

C. Labhart tackle on kickoff.
We have some new faces on the D.   J. Jones at LB, Will Nelson at LB on the D line we have Robert Keeler, Abeer Karim, Andrew Gatherer and Kyle Weinstein. DB is Travis Nadalini. M. Mulholland gets some time also on D line.   Good to get these guys on O and on D some playing time.
HH goes on a 12 play drive 68 yard drive and they score with 8 minutes left in third quarter.
SM 44 HH 14.
We take the ball and keep it really simple. We punt after 3 plays and M. Labhart decks the punt returner and he fumbles and Martinek recovers fumble and rumbles for 5 yards to the HH 9 yard line. Offense stalls, did have completed pass Johnson to Pattison and we miss a 23 yard field goal.
Sorry to say but with about three minutes left in game, the team stopped filming.
FINAL SCORE  - ST Marks  44 - Holland Hall 14

NOTES: We are 6-1 , Greenhill next and unless something really strange happens next weekend, we will have a home playoff game on SATURDAY Nov 3.
QB Webb 18 for 23 for 387 yards and FIVE TD’s.   I believe that two incomplete passes were results on receivers running wrong routes, one pass was dropped and one ball was thrown away. NOT A BAD NIGHT!!!!  John Caldwell  7 catches for 249 yards and FOUR TD’s-- GREAT STUFF. Thompson 5 for 61, Spraglin 3 for 47, Koudelka 2 for 26 and TD. Bowman & Patison with a catch.  Johnson 1 for 2 passing.
Bowman had rushing TD.  Defense only allowed 60 yards passing and made HH punt 5 times. Great job by the kickoff coverage team who were always hustling down-field  Nice job Reid Thompson who went both ways for the whole first half and much of the third quarter. Great job offensive line who didn't give up a sack.

Lions Dominate on ESD Turf

St. Marks  38 -  ESD 19

A tale of two halves, an explosive first half and a penalty filled, sloppy offense and good defense second half.
STM wins the toss and receives, after touchback we start at 25. First down, we go for the bomb, good adjustment on deep sideline pass by Kendrick Spraglin from John Webb and it goes for 31 yards and we have first down on ESD 44. Webb goes deep on first down to John Caldwell, it looked like defender just got a finger on the ball and Caldwell with good concentration, bobbles and pulls it in on a sliding catch at the 2 yard line, 42 yard completion. First down they stuff us on a run, second down a fumbled snap that ESD recovers but they are called for offside. First down on one yd. line, three receivers left, lone receiver right (Caldwell), quick slant Webb to Caldwell TOUCHDOWN. Jacob Wilner PAT is good.  7-0 after four plays, and only one minute and 14 seconds of playing time. Four plays, 75 yards and Webb is 3 for 3 for 75 yards. Good protection from those five faceless, nameless lineman!!
Mac Labhart with the tackle on the short kickoff and ESD starts at their 28. Their good running back Jack Johnson gets two first downs in three carries and 20 yards. ESD than has a ten yard holding penalty and its first and 20. They get 14 back on short pass on first down, second down M. Labhart nice penetrating tackle as he throws runner for a loss, third down good QB pressure by Jimmy Papin as they attempt screen pass but Stephen Rambin & M. Labhart are all over it for no gain. FOURTH DOWN & ITS PUNTING TIME.
ESD punts into our end zone and after a penalty we have first down on the 15 yard line.  QB Webb back to pass and throws the perfect bomb with “air under it” and Spraglin catches it in full stride on the 42 and sprints the other 58 yards for an 85 yard pitch and catch. Not as long as the Joe Bush to Cameron Cole  99 yarder at Greenhill last year, but this is in the top ten of longest TD’s in STM history.  Two other guys made good plays on this TD, besides the QB & receiver, the ESD two defensive ends did a line  stunt, pardon me if I’m now being elementary, ESD has four defensive lineman, 2 ends and 2 tackles, on this play , it’s a good call by their coaches, knowing that we are PROBABLY passing, the two def. tackles rush between our guard and our tackle on both sides, their goal is to get our two lineman(guard & tackle) confused  and to have our two lineman on each side block one guy on each side. The defensive ends hesitate and then run behind their teammate and circle around to the center position to come untouched with a full head of steam and then try to knock Mr. Webb into never never land!! Michael Doorey at center, sees the right end coming off the pile and nails him, Malcolm Bowman with his head on a swivel, sees the left end coming up the middle and blasts him.  Webb then has that extra second to throw and it’s a TD. Well done both guys. I haven’t mentioned him this year but Coach Couch (line coach) has these guys working together, thinking and communicating as a unit and hustling downfield to get that secondary block.  Jacob Wilner PAT is good.
14 to zero   six minutes left in first qtr.
ESD takes over after kickoff at 34 yard line, run for a first down, pass for a first down and then beats our defense for a 52 yard TD pass and its 14-7 with 5 minutes left in first quarter.
St Marks 14, ESD 7.
We receive kickoff in end zone and start at our 25.  Webb hits Reid Thompson for 11 and first down. We then have two incomplete passes and a short run and we are punting for the first time. ESD takes over at the 32. A Johnson run up the middle gets 11 and first down. And then we get an offside penalty and ESD has first and five at midfield. Defense now takes over. First down incomplete pass, second down George Law and Stephen Rambin hold runner for 3 yard gain on its third and two, good QB pressure by Law but receiver is behind our defense but QB overthrows wide open guy. ESD is punting. Great punt that rolls out of bounds at the 2 yard line.
We then go on a 98 yard  7 play TD drive with the help of a 15 ESD penalty.
Webb throwing from the end zone,  9 yard completion to Danny Koudelka. Webb to Spraglin for 10 and first down. Big hole opened by Cole Labhart and Victor Calvillo and Bowman goes for 5 yards.  Webb rolls right and hits Caldwell for 11 and FIRST DOWN. Webb getting some pressure has to scramble left and finds Spraglin who goes high for the catch for 16 yards and another FIRST DOWN. Big hole as Dominic Garcia takes his man completely out of the play, Tommy Gudmundsson cracks down on tackle and Bowman with that great vision cuts back as Doorey gets LB. Gain of 14 and FIRST DOWN at ESD 33. Pass interference call gives us first down on ESD 18 yard line.  Three receivers to the right, Koudelka alone on left side runs a post then flag route and beats his defender and perfect pass from Webb who was under some pressure. and touchdown Koudelka in the back of the end zone. Nice route. PAT by Wilner good. Webb  5 for 5, for 64 yards .
STM 21 ESD 7 30 seconds left in first qtr.
We kickoff and returner finds a hole, Wilner slows him up and nice hustle and speed by Spraglin as he saves a TD and gets the stop at our 24 yard line. Good play by Law who trips up runner for 2 yard gain.
END OF FIRST QUARTER.

Two incomplete passes with Luke Williams and Thompson in coverage.  ESD then hits a 41 yard field goal.
STM 21 ESD 10.
Justin Jones returns kickoff for 22 yards to SM 21 yard line. Good hole between C. Labhart and Calvillo and Bowman goes for nine. First down and good throw to Caldwell streaking down the right sideline for 32 yards. First down on ESD 36. We get first down on 21 after ESD penalty. SM gets a penalty after a nice Webb to Thompson reception that’s called back. Webb hits Spraglin for 11 yards and first down on 18 yard line. Thompson then runs a good post corner pattern and Webb hits him in corner of end zone for Touchdown.  Seven play 78 yard drive. PAT is good by Wilner.
SM 28 ESD 10 with nine minutes left in half.
Big kick off by Wilner and great coverage by (I believe, not a good film angle) Jimmy Papin and Bear Goldstein for a tackle at the NINE. First down good team tackle by Kellum Hall, Papin and M. Labhart for gain of 4, second down Goldstein and Rambin combine on sweep to hold runner for 2 yards. Third down K. Hall blitzes and engages blocker, goes high and knocks pass down. Real good defensive series and ESD is punting from their own 15 yard line. Koudelka 7 yard punt return. We start at our own 43.
We go nowhere on offense and on fourth down Wilner gets his first pass attempt as the punt team kind of implodes and ESD gets the ball at our 45 yard line. M. Labhart and Papin stops Johnson for 4 yard gain, Chris Roach has the pass defense on second down. Third down another incomplete pass. Fourth and six and ESD hits a crossing pass to our 22 yard line. We have a ten yard penalty and on first down, short pass for touchdown, ESD goes for two, I don’t understand that strategy in the second quarter, and receiver drops a pass.
SM 28 ESD 16. Five minutes left in half.
Kickoff into end zone and we start at the 25  we then go on a 12 play drive that also has FIVE penalties.
Webb to Spraglin for 7, Webb runs for 2 and Bowman gets a tough yard for First Down. Webb scrambles and hits Caldwell for 12 and first down at SM 48. Webb to Thompson for 5 yards. Webb to Bowman for 11 yards on a swing pass to ESD 36. They get a pick but they also get a penalty and we have first down on 19. Nice hole between Garcia and Gudmundsson on a draw and Bowman goes for 9 yards. Bowman with a tough inside run and goes for 7 and first down at ESD 3 yard line. We then get hit with two holding penalties and the ESD has a penalty and we have first down on the Seven yard line.  Webb then hits Caldwell on down and out pattern for TD pass Wilner PAT is good.
SM 35-  ESD 16
HALFTIME.

THERE WILL BE NOT MUCH OFFENSE IN THE SECOND HALF, some will be caused by good defense and some will be caused by sloppy offense.
We kick off & ESD starts the third quarter on the 24 after short kickoff, ESD runs five plays, gets one first down and has to punt at their 42 yard line. First down with M. Labhart standing up the runner on solid hit and Martinek & Papin finishing off runner for no gain. Lendon Hall with tackle after first down completion. Goldstein with good pursuit and hit on short pass. Next play Papin dropping back into his zone coverage area almost has an interception as he knocks ball down. Third down Rambin smells out the screen pass and is all over the receiver with help from George Law, Thompson & Goldstein were also bearing down- good defense & no gain.
ESD punts, short return by Koudelka and we start at the 20 yard line.
First down and every offensive lineman does his job, Garcia blocks his man so far that they both go off the film. Both guards C. Labhart and Gudmundsson control their men to the outside, Doorey gets the onside LB and Calvillo gets the offside LB,   Bowman reads the blocks, makes a cut and has a quick nine yard gain.  Well designed and well executed play. Good pass and catch Webb to Caldwell for 9 yards to the 40. Third and one, sometimes Bowman has hole and sometimes its all him—LB comes free and Bowman shrugs him off in the backfield and then has a tough hard run going over people for 8 yards. First down at our 40.  Second down Webb hits Caldwell for 7 yards and the play was saved AGAIN by Bowman who picked up the blitzer and gave Webb that extra second. On 4th and 2- Webb hits Caldwell again for 5 yards and first down on ESD 39. On second down Webb hits Thompson on a crossing pattern and as Reid turns up field, the safety hits him low and Thompson does a forward flip and lands on his back but holds onto the ball. Scary looking when we saw it live .Sixteen yards and first down at ESD 23. Our offense than stalls, two penalties, a run for zero, two incomplete passes and on fourth down QB Webb is sacked for first time and it’s a 10 yard loss  and ESD takes over the ball.
ESD hits two passes for 44 yards and first down at SM 14. Two passes incomplete, good coverage by Roach on 2nd down, on third and ten Thompson with the tackle after completed pass and its fourth and 3 and ESD hits a 24 yard field goal.
SM 35 ESD 19 --two minutes left in third quarter.
ESD kicks off and Koudelka takes the ball at the three, gets two good blocks from Calvillo and Goldstein, fakes out one guy and goes for  69 yards to the ESD 28, good run and our longest kick return of the year and Danny comes close to breaking it all the way.  Webb to Thompson for 5 yards, we then have two incomplete passes, one was a drop and we then miss a 40 yard field goal and ESD has the ball again on their 23.
First down QB rolls right and stops to throw and Papin crushes him from behind and the ball pops free and Kyle Weinstein recovers the fumble at ESD 16 yard line.
We have an incomplete pass, ESD penalty and SM penalty and we end the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER.
We have 3rd and 20 at ESD 26, Webb hits Caldwell for 12 yards and gets some extra yards with a good move.   Jacob Wilner with a 31 yard field goal on fourth down.
SM 38 - ESD 19.
ESD returns kickoff to the 31 yard line. We are hit with 15 yard pass interference penalty and first down at their 46.  ESD hits three passes in a row for 28 yards and a second down and eight at our 28 yard line, Justin Jones at defensive end/LB puts pressure on QB who throws a down and out, Thompson reading QB eyes, jumps the route, goes high for the PICK and if it wasn’t for the short side of the field and another receiver in the area would have gone the distance. Good play!!!   Our offense goes nowhere, two runs for not much, a penalty and incomplete pass.
Wilner bombs a punt with a good roll for 60 yards that goes to the ESD 8 yard line. NICE.
ESD penalty and they are backed up with a first down at their 4 yard line. ESD goes for the deep pass on first down and Thompson running with the receiver and has the good inside position, uses his body perfectly as a shield and has his second interception in two plays and is downed at the ESD 34. That gives us three defensive turnovers in the last three ESD series. YES!!
Webb hits Thompson for 7, Bowman tough inside run for 5 and first down to the ESD 22. Webb to Caldwell for 11 yards and first down at the Eleven.  We then have two runs for not much and incomplete pass and we miss a field goal with five minutes left in game.
ESD has the ball for six plays, gets one first down and on the sixth play Luke Williams intercepts and runs the ball for an apparent TD. But we have a penalty after the interception  Good hits on this series by Papin and M. Labhart.
Walter Johnson in at QB and we run Jones & W. Johnson and give ESD ball back after four plays
Good play by Rambin and Abeer Karim on first down. Good pursuit by Jones on second down. And on final play of game, QB pressure by Robert Keeler and L. Hall in coverage. We had several of the sophomores seeing some playing time in the last couple of series.
FINAL SCORE   St Marks 38 -  ESD 19.

NOTES:  I found a couple of mistakes with the Dallas Morning News stats but I have no other options. QB Webb was 26 for 42 and 365 yards and FIVE TD’s and probably had 5 balls dropped. Malcolm Bowman 20 carries for 71 yards. Receiving: Caldwell 10 catches for 149 yards and TWO TD’s; Spraglin 6 catches for 148 and TD; Thompson 6-62 and TD; Koudelka 3 for 27 and TD. Bowman 1 for 11. Webb only had one sack as ESD constantly was blitzing in second half-good job O Line.
Defense: after giving up 19 points in first half and some points were result of short field possessions. Defense gives up only 3 points in second half. ESD got only 58 yards rushing in the game. Good job. We only had two interceptions in previous 5 games (Rambin & L. Hall) so it was nice to see THREE on Friday, two for Reid Thompson and one for Luke Williams. And with the Papin QB hit for a fumble, which gave us four turnovers in 4 straight series.
PLAYOFFS: I talked to Mark Sullivan, AD before game on Friday. If we win the next two games, Holland Hall and Greenhill than we will be North SPC #1seed (large school) and will have a home game on SATURDAY November 3 against more than likely the loser of the Oct 19 game between Houston Kinkaid vs. Houston Bellaire Episcopal. Two real good teams.
Holland hall was really embarrassed last Friday and our guys really have to come out and take it to them from the START on this Friday night.

Big Win Against the Owls!

Saint Marks 42 - Arlington Oakridge 20.

A fun and exciting night at Hunt Stadium.
We receive the opening kick and Justin Jones returns it to the 18 yard line. Coach Epp and John Webb go to work.  Webb hits Danny Koudelka for 4 yards, Malcolm Bowman runs for 8 and FIRST DOWN.  Nice sliding catch by Kendrick Spraglin for 10 and FIRST DOWN. Reid Thompson goes high for catch and run for 15 yards and FIRST DOWN. WE are at AO 45 yard line. Webb to Koudelka for 6 yards, Webb hits Thompson in traffic for 8 yards and FIRST DOWN. Ball at AO 31 yard line. On third and ten QB Webb runs for 8 yards and we have a 4th and 2 at the AO 23 yard line. Webb takes an option running route to the right and freezes the defensive end and pitches to Bowman, Thompson seals the LB and John Caldwell blocking DB, Bowman makes two guys miss and sprints for a 23 yard TD. Jacob Wilner good on the PAT. After only 2 and a half minutes of play.
SM 7 AO zero.
ELEVEN PLAY 82 yard drive, Webb 5 for 8 for 43 yards. And QB runs for 8 yards also.  And except for a cheap shot on John Webb on the Bowman TD run, he wasn’t touched. Malcolm Bowman two carries for 31 yards and TD. Great start and those offensive lineman are doing the stuff that offensive lineman are supposed to do !!!
Short kickoff and Oakridge starts on the 30 yard line. Second and six and we blitz on a five receiver shotgun formation and they call the perfect play and QB hits a quick post and receiver goes for a 66 yard TD.  So AO ties the score in 34 seconds and maybe this won’t be as easy as our first drive!!
7 to 7  Nine Minutes remaining in FIRST Quarter.
Justin Jones 28 yard kickoff return and we start at the SM 32 yard line. Webb hits short passes to Caldwell and Bowman but we get a big holding penalty on a long run and we have to punt.
AO starts at their own 34. Cole Labhart with the tackle on the punt coverage team. Oakridge runs for 11 yards and first down. Short pass and a run gives them the second first down on SM 42 yard line. Kellum Hall good QB hit on a blitz. On third and 12 good pursuit by Jimmy Papin and Chris Roach fights off a block and they combine for a stop for no yards and AO is punting.
We start at the 20. Webb to Caldwell for 4, Bowman runs for 4 and Webb to Thompson for 8 and FIRST DOWN.  On 3rd and 12 Webb hits Caldwell for 13 and FIRST DOWN, nice pass and sliding catch by Caldwell. On second down a quick slant Webb to Caldwell and another FIRST DOWN for 15 yards to AO 38 yard line.
On first down Michael Doorey takes nose guard to his right, C. Labhart gets the onside LB and Victor Calvillo seals the def end and Bowman makes a cut and has a big hole and goes for 14 yards and FIRST DOWN. On third and 12 the Webb to Caldwell duo hook up again for 17 yards and a first down on the AO 9 yard line. First down Thompson splits the two safeties in the zone and Webb hits him with a quick strike and Thompson good catch in traffic in the back of the end zone TD!!  Wilner good on PAT.
SM 14 AO 7  at end of FIRST QUARTER.

Oakridge starts at 31 yard line after kickoff. Oakridge than goes on a 13 play drive that gets them four first downs and actually gets a first down at our ten yard line. Our defense bends but doesn’t break. We have good hits/stops by Mac Labhart(2), Jimmy Papin(2), George Law, Chris Roach, Lendon Hall, Bear Goldstein and Luke Williams.  We hold and they miss a 27 yard field goal.
QB Webb and company then goes 5 plays, 80 yards and one AO penalty for a touchdown.  Webb hits Koudelka for two passes and a first down on the SM 33 yard line.  Webb than hits Thompson on a drag pass behind the middle linebacker, Reid catches and turns up field for another 25 plus yards and it’s a 43 yard pass and run after catch. FIRST DOWN on AO 24 yard line.  Oakridge has a pretty DUMB roughing the passer penalty and we have first down on their 12 yard line.
Koudelka runs a quick two step slant and then turns it up field and Webb hits him perfectly with a touch pass right at the back of the end zone for a TD. Good route, good pass.  PAT is no good.
SM 20 AO 7  with 8 minutes left in first half.
Oakridge takes the ball after kickoff on their 27 yard line and they again have a long drive of 12 plays and four first downs that gets to our 15 yard line; and again our defense gives a little but in the end shuts them down. Hustling play by Kellum Hall, tackles for losses or short gains by Otto Martinek, Stephen Rambin, Goldstein, Papin, M. Labhart and George Law. Pass defense plays by Chris Roach (2) and Luke Williams and good QB sack by K. Hall.  Oakridge coach starts the drive with three timeouts and doesn’t call his first timeout until there is two seconds left in half-  pretty bizarre coaching but the St Marks crowd says THANK YOU COACH !!!
HALFTIME   ST MARKS - 20 Arlington Oakridge 7.

SM 20 Oakridge 14  with  9 minutes left in third quarter.
J. Jones return kickoff to SM 27 yard line and offense goes to work. Webb hits Kendrick Spraglin for 11 and first down. Next play looks like some miscommunication between QB and receiver and we have second turnover in two series. First down at STM 30. A nice reverse play nets 19 and its first down on our 11 yard line. First down Papin fought off blocker and with assist from Law & Martinek holds runner for two yard gain. Second down Rambin, Goldstein and Papin with stop. We start at the 20, one yard run and then a 12 yard Webb to Caldwell pass and FIRST DOWN on the 33 yard line. Quick bubble screen to Spraglin and left side on O line is leading the way with Victor Calvillo, Cole Labhart and Michael Doorey. Catches the ball at the 30, gets a block from Koudelka, makes a guy miss and goes 67 yards for the score. BIG PLAY!!  We go for two and its Webb to Caldwell for the conversion.
St Marks 28- Oakridge 14. Five minutes left in third quarter.
Short kickoff and good return and AO starts at midfield.
Roach nice pass defense on long ball on the sideline, short run and completed pass give AO first down on STM 38 yard line. Good hole on their right side and ball carrier goes for 14 and its first down on our 24 yard line.  NOW THE DEFENSE HOLDS.  First down receiver breaks free and Williams at last second bats the ball away to save a TD. Second down high snap mishandled and Law is right on QB and loss of 3. Third down Martinek reads the counter play and with help from K. Hall and Cameron Baxley throw runner for three yard loss.  Fourth down good QB pressure by K. Hall but receiver is open down the middle and Goldstein with a diving block going over receiver knocks ball away, another potential TD pass.   GOOD SERIES.
We take over on our 33 yard line. On second down nice play by Dominic Garcia and Tommy Gudmundsson on a line stunt, Garcia takes the inside guy and Gudmundsson has to hustle to take the outside guy and they both protect Webb who then throws an eight yard slant to Caldwell and Caldwell then weaves around the defenders for another 22 yards and it’s a gain of 30. FIRST DOWN at AO 37. Webb hits Spraglin for 11 yards on a hitch and we are setting up the DB. FIRST DOWN at AO 26.
Next play looks the same, Spraglin runs the short hitch, Webb gives him the pump and Spraglin is running deep and has a step on defender and Webb with a perfect 30 yard pass that Spraglin just gets to a makes a great one handed catch at the goal line and  TD.  FOUR PLAY  67 yard drive Webb 3 for 3 for, you guessed correctly, 67 yards. Good protection OFF LINE. Wilner PAT is good.

Next play from our 13 yard line, nice hole between Doorey and Gudmundsson and Bowman darts through, Garcia flattens his man, Thompson and Caldwell get a LB and DB respectively and Bowman goes for 82 yards and is tackled at the 5 yard line. Koudelka catches the ball as he is hit at our 38 yard line; I thought there should have been a penalty as Danny was given no room for the catch.
First down and Webb hits Kendrick Spraglin for 9, and then Michael Doorey with a nice pancake block, Tommy Gudmundsson goes after LB and Dominic Garcia with a good seal block and its great to see Malcolm Bowman with the ball in his hand and he goes around the right end for a first down. Then a well-designed play, Caldwell runs a fake bubble screen, Thompson fakes a block on his DB and the DB crashes in to get Caldwell and Thompson runs right past the DB and is all alone in corner of end zone and its Webb to Thompson for 11 yard TD.  We go for TWO and hard run by Bowman gets us the points.

Casady starts at their 25 after kickoff. Papin good hit after 4 yard completion, on second down QB under pressure from K. Hall, Rambin & Martinek, ball slips out of his hand and they recover for a big loss. But then those old OKLAHOMA refs come in and claim incomplete pass. I don’t think so. Third down quick throw and completion and Roach with good tackle and its fourth and two and not much time left. Two receivers to our left and QB looks that way and throws and K. Hall goes high and bats the ball down. We had good coverage from Goldstein, Papin and Roach but it doesn’t matter and game over. We take the victory shotgun formation for two snaps.
FINAL SCORE St Marks 24, Casady 19.

NOTES: I usually use the Dallas Morning News stats for the official stats but I could find no stats anywhere including the OK newspapers. So I compiled the stats as best as I could by looking at the game film.
Passing Webb  30 for 52 288 yards and 2 TD’s.
Receiving: Caldwell  11 catches for 117 yards; Koudelka 6 catches for 50 yards; Thompson 5 for 61 and a TD. Spraglin 4 for 46 and a TD. Jones & Bowman each had 2 catches.
Rushing: Bowman 12 for 62 and a TD; Jones 12 for 41 and Webb 7 for 34. I did not count the two game ending kneel downs as loss of yards.
I don’t know what the time of possession was but we ran 83 offensive plays and they had only 37 WOW!!!   Good long drives by us and many three and outs by the defense.   Next up is a real good Arlington Oakridge team that only lost to All Saints by ten.       MD
